Anyone else out there think that Dan Maines from Clutch is one bad Mofo on the bass?, and he sporting some really cool looking and sounding Laklands.

Hellz Ya. "Clutch" is a great CD and still my fave. Dan and Jean-Paul lay down the metal stoned funk fo sho.

T-minus whenever it feels right. Jesus on the dashboard!

Ultimate role player. Not hidden ever and never yelling look at me. He lets the song be the focus. Really the whole band is like that.

I try to let that mindset influence my writing.

Yeah, Clutch is rolling through town in October w/ BLS. I'm pretty stoked to see them.

I totally agree. Dan and Jean-Paul are an amazing rhythm section- they're never flashy unless the song calls for it, and the pocket they get into is just out of this world.

I especially love his playing on their self-titled album since the bass and drums really take charge, and the guitars and vocals are a bit more free-form.

What's your favourite riff from Mr. Maines?
It's tough to pick among the fantastic grooves on their self titled, but it's hard to argue against Big News I and II: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_K-FE...eature=related
Of course, Profits of Doom is a classic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpK2rVgJG2o
What other riffs really stand out for you?

When did he get the Laklands? Last I saw him, he had a Jazz and an EB-type Gibson that I didn't get a close look at.

I have seen him play lots of different basses over the years from a J bass to a ric to gibsons to a P bass and now lakland. I love that I have never seen him play a solo on any of them!!!

+1 - You have to serve the song and he does a fantastic job of it for sure. That's probably one of the reasons that those boys are still kickin' a$$ after all this time.

Re-heating this thread for one simple reason:

Dan f&$#ing Maines!

I go in streaks of listening to Clutch, but they are among the best at grooving on cool riffs -- Maines and J-P Gaster are dialed in so well.

Saw Clutch live last night in Athens, Greece.
Dan had a meaty, overdriven, crushing tone with his Ric!
By the end of the gig I caught a quick glimpse of the stage and (with a minor reserve) all I saw between the Ric and the two STV's was a.... boss tuner!
Perfection through simplicity
