Darryl Jennifer (Bad Brains)

I saw Bad Brains live back in June as they are one of my favorite bands. I knew that I liked Dr. Know's guitar playing, but I had no idea how much Darryl contributes to the sound until I saw them. Since Dr. Know plays a wimpy CBS strat through a lot of distortion, he isn't filling up the low end much. Darryl Jennifer adds so much fullness and feel to that band that the drummer could not show up and they'd be fine. He alternated between pick and fingers in the same song and he played chords a lot, which I also thought was cool. Also he could alternate between that distorted punk tone and a reggae sound with no problem, and I didn't see him step on any pedals either. He isn't Les Claypool-technical (i hate Primus btw), but Darryl Jennifer is great fun to watch live.

Any other fans of his on TB?

I spent my formative gigging years in DC and saw them many times--opened for them too(but man, that's a hazy memory . . . .)

He is awesome. His hybridization of rock and reggae/dub bass is a thing of beauty. A woefully under-appreciated player.

i personally like his playing on "the regulator" best. now that i'm thinking about it, i take back what i said about not being technical.

Thought I recognized that avatar from somewhere. RIP David!

Darryl is a beast. I mean, this is what happens when you take a fusion jazz band and introduce them to hardcore.
