Even crazier, when I saw Megadeth, at the end of a song, he did a bass sweep, full on. This guy is just crazy.

Seriously? Judging by that clip?! I've nothing against Ellefson but that was a lame excuse for a solo. If you're going to do a bass solo in front of thousands of people you better have something to offer other than a few hackneyed bass riffs and some rudimentary tapping.

Cliff was original, unique and a truly exciting bass player. This was one small step removed from those Gene Simmons/ Michael Anthony clips that do the rounds.

Funny, Ellefson has praised Gene numerous times, so I think he'd beg to differ.

Anywho, Dave is still pretty awesome. One of the best heavy metal bassists, IMO.

I've praised Gene several times too, but his 80s bass solo is truly awful.

And again, I agree that David Ellefson is a great metal bassist, but that solo was a bit embarrassing.

No im not judging by that clip. Im juding by listening to all the Megadeths records and Cliffs work with Metallica. Cliff is basically following the guitar, and most of the time he plays the riffs halfspeed and rather sloppy offtime, not being tight. Whipsplash, Battery and such. Dave has better technique and plays dead on time with interesting bassfills and basslines. But i think Cliff was a greater artist/composer than David. He was also the greater at playing bassolos. But techniquewise Daves better, mojo and feeling and being a legend, then Cliff winns!!! But thats just my 2 cents. U are free to have a different opinion!!!

I suppose I would agree with that.
But that solo clip was dreadful...

Gotta agree with that. I am more Megadeth then Metallica but...ya.....that was suspect at best. Maybe he was missing his Jack Daniels bass.

Dave is a very good bassist but pretty sure Cliff might have had more overall influence. Read the biography on Cliff that came out a year ago or so. You really get a sense of how much Cliff directed Metallica and what a powerful influence he was on the band. Way more then I had ever thought before reading the book.

Was this link supposed to be a joke?? Better than Cliff? I'm sure Dave is a Cat, but there's got to be a better example of his skills to even put him in the same sentence as Cliff.

I wasn't putting that up to show that Dave sucks because he doesn't shred like every other bassist...

Cliff was good, REALLY good. But this solo seemed, I guess, more tasteful than another bassist shredding away like crazy. I mean, yeah, shredding is impressive, but I think something with more groove and feel is a better solo.

That being said, Cliff really put a lot of melody and groove into Anesthesia.

Why does everything have to be a competition?

Yes, we should start a "who is the better metal bassist" discussion because this has not been done to death.

I agree with Satori, who cares.

They're both very different bass players who excel at different things. I would say Cliff is better at solos and composing and Dave has more interesting basslines and way better tone. All my opinion of course...

I actually think that type of solo fits pretty well into a Megadeth show. After all,IMO,I just can't really see him breakin' out into some slap/pop/jazz-fusion type of solo riffing,at least for that type of musical environment. But,that's just me,though. Ain't it?
