| | | | David Ellefson down picking. Help!

In this song ‪Megadeth - Tornado Of Souls - bass only‬‏ - YouTube at 2:30, he goes into down picking for the guitar solo. I'm a mediocre pick bassist, but down picking for that long is incredibly difficult! I feel like my picking hand is too bent and tense after picking for a little bit. How do I need to practice to get my down picking that good, and how long does it take? |

As for how long it takes to build up your technique, it all depends on how fast you learn, really. Just keep yourself relaxed, go over it slowly, try to be as fluid as you can, practice often, and you'll get it. |

EDIT: I bring it up because it's so much easier to go up and down then just down and that could be part of the problem OP is having at that speed.

You want to make sure you have a solid grip on the pick but that everything else - fingers, palm, hand, wrist, forearm, lats etc - are relaxed - this will increase attack on the strings and help with endurance.
Look up some YouTube videos on using a pick to make sure you are using good technique and if pain persists, consult a teacher or a known local pro etc.

You really just need to practice. Try to relax. I see a lot of guys tense up when they do runs like that, and that usually results in non even sounding notes that are out of time.

Id say start learning just downpicking on the slower songs like symphony of destruction? maybe that would help?
