David Ellefson down picking. Help!

Sign in to disble this ad
In this song ‪Megadeth - Tornado Of Souls - bass only‬‏ - YouTube at 2:30, he goes into down picking for the guitar solo. I'm a mediocre pick bassist, but down picking for that long is incredibly difficult! I feel like my picking hand is too bent and tense after picking for a little bit. How do I need to practice to get my down picking that good, and how long does it take?

Why do you have to down pick vs. going up/down?

I think he's trying to do it exactly as Ellefson did. I'd say do it your own way, but that's not really going to help your picking. This might be a silly question, but how relaxed is your hand when you're playing?

As for how long it takes to build up your technique, it all depends on how fast you learn, really. Just keep yourself relaxed, go over it slowly, try to be as fluid as you can, practice often, and you'll get it.

That's the thing... David Ellefson doesn't just down pick. Unless the OP knows he just down picked for this section of this specifc song.

‪David Ellefson's ROCK SHOP (perfecting the pocket)‬‏ - YouTube

EDIT: I bring it up because it's so much easier to go up and down then just down and that could be part of the problem OP is having at that speed.

Just do alternate picking. There's no advantage to just downstrokes. If you really have to, don't anchor your hand. It can restrict movement a bit.

Every person will progress at a different rate just make sure you start properly, slowly, and work your speed up in line with your capability otherwise you may get discouraged.

You want to make sure you have a solid grip on the pick but that everything else - fingers, palm, hand, wrist, forearm, lats etc - are relaxed - this will increase attack on the strings and help with endurance.

Look up some YouTube videos on using a pick to make sure you are using good technique and if pain persists, consult a teacher or a known local pro etc.

Dave is a picking master.

You really just need to practice. Try to relax. I see a lot of guys tense up when they do runs like that, and that usually results in non even sounding notes that are out of time.

thats because downpicking sounds more consistant. try it both ways and hear the difference. unless your a machine, you cant up and down pick with your pick at the same angle. if the pick is not exactly parallel with the string, one edge hits the string on the downpick, then the opposite edge with the up pick.

Dino from fear factory practices with weight gloves on. Down picking is an art form. It is kind of funny because mustaine is always alternate picking, even slower stuff where it's not needed.

They're from the guitar hero/ rock band games.
Id say start learning just downpicking on the slower songs like symphony of destruction? maybe that would help?
