David Hood from Muscle Shoals: Check This link!

The latest issue of Bass Player (April, 2007 w/Mike Watt) features David Hood's Alembic in David Pomeroy's "Retro-Rama" section. David Hood is a great hero of Southern Soul Music, IMO. I always have dug the fact that so many of his super downhome songs like the Staple Singers, "I'll Take You There" were recorded on a Series One Alembic. He is a classic example of the tone in one's hands.

I don't know DR. Cheese, I remember 'I'll Take You There' from about '71-72, predates the Alembic by a few years.

What a buzz killer! Oh well, super down home David Hood still used Alembic for 1,000 sessions. Pretty good for a neck heavy bass with a sterile tone.

From David Hood's site quoting a Bass Player magazine article:

On classic tracks such as the Staple Singers’ “I’ll Take You There,” Be Altitude: Respect Yourself [Stax]: ’61 Fender Jazz w/all controls on full, recorded direct with a 60-watt Fender Bassman and Concert 4x10 monitor. “This was true for all the records I played on from the mid ’60s to the mid ’70s—Aretha, Rod Stewart, Traffic, Paul Simon, and all the rest.”

No attempt to hijack here, but I'm a HUGE fan of his son, Patterson Hood from the Drive By Truckers.
Unfortunate band name, amazing, amazing band.

Huge fan! One of the best flat-out roots-rock bands we have today IMHO.

+1! I saw them last year for the first time, they blew the doors off the place. And on record, I'm struck by the general thoughtfulness of their lyrics, too. Oh, and I happen to like the name.

Years ago, David was playing a prototype bass made by Rick Turner.

Big David Hood fan here!
I am soooo relieved that my perception of his tone as being a Fender Jazz strung with flats was right.
