Was David Hungate the bassist for Rickie Lee Jones' first album?

I have the Album and CD somewhere but can't find it to see what the credits say.

Don't think so. He did play on "The Magazine" and "Duchess of Coolsville".

IIRC, Willie Weeks is on the 1st album...Chuck Rainey is on the follow-up (Pirates).

Jeff Porcaro, Hungate's pal from Toto, played drums on a couple of her records...there's an interview or two in Modern Drummer where Porcaro tells a very bad story about playing with her on the first go-round.

Willie? cool!

Everytime I hear "Danny's All Star Joint" I love that bass line. Even though it's a very simple walking blues slapped. Very effective for the song.

Has anyone here heard his solo album Souvenir? I'm wondering how it is.

i'd love to hear that too. hungate is defnitley an uderappreciated bassist just like so many other 'studio cats' fiom the 70's/early 80's

his bassline on 99 by toto is just amazing, so understated due to the fretless? p he's slapping, but really a great bassline. the outro 'solo' is very musical, check it out if you haven't heard it yet.

his solo album is said to have a Yellowjackets/Metheny vibe to it... Now I'm really going to look for it.

Yes, the outro to "99" is happening.

I have Hungate's solo disc..my recollection is that it didn't blow me away. I'll need to re-visit it 'cause it's been awhile.

Hungate's Slap/Pop thing on Lee Ritenour's "Mr. Briefcase" (from the album Rit) is another bitch.
(Woodchuck & I always talk about this...I have the LP & it has a Track-By-Track listing & Hungate is credited as the bassist on "Mr. Briefcase". Woodchuck has a cassette with a general listing of the musicians ergo he leans toward Louis Johnson as the bassist on that particular track).

I have it too, and feel like Jim does....I remember it being a little "smooth", but it has been a little while for me also. Maybe I'll bump the new Joni out of the CD player and listen to it again today.

David Hungate lives here in Nashville, TN and still stays busy doing sessions. He's a great musician and also plays excellent archtop swing/jazz guitar, as well as trombone.
