Dee Murray, along with Dennis Dunaway (Alice Cooper) and John Deacon (Queen), are my holy triumvirate of 70's rock bassists...

For live Dee, get EJ's 11-17-70. Just amazing.

I have the complete 11/17/70 radio broadcast on bootleg CD, it's amazing, lot more songs than the official release.

Nice to see

...people are still talking about Dee on here. Would be great to get a bunch of us bass players together to listen and discuss Dee's work. He was an example to all aspiring bass players (me included) on how to play a song and had a sense of timing, harmony and melody like few others.

What's the full set list? I've heard other live stuff from 1970 and that was one awesome trio...my word. Talk about three people putting power into music. And not a Les Paul in sight.

Bringing up an oldie but goodie discussion. I've always admired Dee Murray's playing. Is there a web site--I googled, no luck--that details his gear?

I know he played some G&L basses.

I'm a firm believer that if someone learns to play all of the Beatles tunes and all of Elton John's tunes (and studies them carefully) that they'll have a very good understanding of what it takes to write a great pop tune. There's a whole education in that music.

They had real songs (now I'm showing my age). It wasn't just production. They were all brilliant, intuitive musicians too. DM played for the song and had an innate sense of melody.

...recently read Ken Scott's book. Scott was the engineer for Honky Chateau, Don't Shoot Me, etc.
Those EJ sessions typically ran TWO weeks to record...TWO weeks to mix...album out on the street shortly thereafter.
Bands/artists, at the time, were expected to produce TWO albums per year.
Scott sez the industry should go back to that expectation....would weed out the poseurs.

I agree. Those songs had melody, harmony, and rhythm.

There is not.

I can tell you,
70s was mostly Fender Jazzes, plus Precisions, a Rickenbacker, and a Gibson EB.
80s was G&L and Steinberger(which I own).

I love Dee Murray's work on the albums up through 75. But the time I first saw him, he slapped and popped all night. I don't think that was a good time for him. It's been so long ago, I forget the bass he played or which tour it was.

I was very fortunate to see Elton and the original band in Australia (I think it was the '82 tour with Ray Cooper), and the big thrills for me were Funeral For a Friend and Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting. Murray never played the same line twice, and you're so taken with his melodies you forget he's also carving a terrific rhythm.

I had the chance to meet both Dee and Nigel at my (believe it or not) high school dance in 1968 or 69. They were with Spencer Davis. I was 16 or 17 years old and had to photograph them all in the lockeroom off our gym for our school newspaper. Because the “reporter” didn’t show up, I had to interview them as well. They were all very kind and helpful.

To all you wanna be rockers out there who conger up images the likes of those two greats at Giant stadium or MSG with dozens of willing girls backstage, think more realistically… about my high school locker room and a 16-17 year old boy with a roll of Tri-X and a ball point pen!

Haven't thought of Dee Murray in ages! 11-17-70 knocked me out!
