Derek Graves,bassist for Dexter Wansel...

Any of you guys familier with Jazz keyboardist "Dexter Wansel"?("Life on Mars"&"Theme from the Planets".) His Bassist is Derek Graves(any of you guys familier with him?)is one bad bassist.

You should be there, up in the sky. Mars. That is a great tune and the Bass is really hitting hard. A different take on an A minor groove ala Rock Creek Park by Donald Byrd and the Blackbirds.

Man are you kidding , Derrick was one of the baddest basses to come out of Philly.
I use to check him out all the time in Philly. That whole Dexter band was crazy ,Herb Smith - guitar , Daryl Washington - drums (Grover's brother ) then later Pete Grub
These cats burned , Derrick moved on and played with Ben Vereen. Sure would like to know what he's up to now.

Digging up an old thread here but I met Derrick today, he was playing with Kathy Sledge in Philly, we played before them. Indeed a badass and a really nice guy. Must be a fun gig, they did a lot of Stevie Wonder and of course plenty of sister sledge. He had a cool take on those Bernard lines, all the others too. They did "Do I Do" and it was amazing.
