why does this man not get more love around here?

i honestly believe he's the best electric bass player on the planet. i saw his trio last night. it furthered that opinion.

i could type a whole wall of text explaining why, and how his rhythmic concepts can make a paraplegic get up and dance, and how his solos are so perfect and all that, but do some research and see for yourself people

I like him. I thought he was great on that last Maxwell CD.
I love that 1990s Fender Jazz Deluxe that he uses. It's the same model as Sharay Reed's.

the red 5 string? he sounds pretty good on that bass.

he's been using that weird fretless 4 a lot lately, every other tune last night, and that thing sounds awfull. the bridge pickup is too close to the bridge, and i think its got a piezo too- not a great sound. he still makes beautifull music on it, though.

i always dug him. but seeing him as a bandleader put it in a much bigger perspective.

Not only is Derrick a monster on the electric, he lays it down on upright as well!

I saw the him with the Robert Glasper Experiment a couple months back. It was one of the best shows I've ever attended. Incredible interplay and dynamics between all the guys up there. Hodge was equally amazing at locking in and keeping a groove and at beautiful, melodic soloing with tons of double stops/chords. It was really impressive.

I have to say though, that the most impressive thing about that show was the drummer, Chris Dave. That man is VERSITILE...

Hodge's shiny, red 5-string was nice too, though.

thats how i felt about derrick untill i saw him as a bandleader. hearing his compositions and him getting to really stretch out is what blew me away so much more than he already did.

im totally looking forward to his new album.

Chris Dave was also impressive on D'Angelo's European tour that just finished last month.
