Derrick Hodge in Bass Player

Check out the Derrick Hodge in the July issue of Bass Player. He gives some nice info on his work with Maxwell. The July issue is the best BP issue I have seen in a while. The Avishai Cohen cover story is great and the Afro Bass series is a winner.

The review of the Will Lee Sadowsky Sig is funny because the tone descriptions make me wonder if Jonathan Herrera has been reading TB for info.

This is a very good issue. My son (who is a Music Major in the Jazz Program) and I were blessed to see Terence Blanchard here in town about a year ago. Derrick Hodge absolutely killed on electric and upright! Great concert!!!

He did a fantastic job at the recent Maxwell show I took in - I suppose it should even be a blessing that I heard the bass in an arena show, but the he and the band were wonderful. Of course, sharing a rhythm section with Chris Dave and Robert Glasper doesn't hurt, either.

Was he playing his Fender Jazz Deluxe V?

I thought the issue was good too. But Cohen did seem a bit arrogant at times.

Just confident. He is one of the best and actually has a fresh look on music and is making new music that sounds like no one else, and sounds good.
