Devoting time to Geddy

Sign in to disble this ad
Lately, I have been delving really deep into Rush's bass work. Trying to play all their old stuff (Bastille Day,What your Doing). So much so, I'm thinking of establishing like a binder of all Rush bass tabs for myself. Dividing it into sections, 70's, 80's etc...

We'll see how it goes. Geddy's work has definitely gotten easier for me after 4 years, but there is still alot of his stuff I can't play like yyz, The big money, Digital Man.

Anyone here devote alot of time to one band or bass player?

Douglas.

I figured out almost all bass lines of Steve Harris. Took something like 2 years.

I've been figuring out Jamiquai bass lines since June. So far I almost nailed down 30+ songs.

I spent years trying to nail all the stuff in this video.

Just out of interest, did you ever get around to Sheriff of Huddersfield? There's a voice in my head shouting at me to learn it, but I can't find any starting points on the internet.

What part of "Sheriff of Huddersfield" is giving you trouble? Although I have yet to sit down and transcribe a Maiden's B-side single, it's a straight rock song in A with a few fills here and there IIRC.

I'd always thought it was in E (like most Maiden songs)...

Thanks, that should be enough to get a start going.

Damn, you just love Rush, don't you? That huge list, your signature, etc...
How long did it even take you to learn all those?

I live in a town with nothing to do but sit at home and play bass, and I first starting getting into Rush when I was about thirteen.

So I learned all those in about 5 years.

I basically learned how to play bass by learning RUSH way back in middle school. Moving Pictures, 2112, Permanent Waves, Hemispheres, etc.

Well, that certainly makes sense.

Similar story here, I sat down and dedicated my learning to the Rush catalog once I'd discovered him (again, at about 13). Had learned everything through Hold Your Fire at that point. Of course, then I started playing some of 'em live and realized I didn't actually have 'em 'down'. Big difference on the stage. But damn, was it fun.

I<34080. Man you must be beast at bass. You must put up your videos. How long do you think an average song took. For me, it takes like two weeks, but in that time period I'll be working on other stuff.

Depends, I learned repetitive stuff like Best I Can and I Think I'm Going Bald in a few hours.

I learned La Villa when I was 14 and that took like a month.

Geddy is my current love. His lines just have everything I like in them, and are my warm-ups and "to-learns", depending on the song. I know every song from Fly By Night til Signals" and a bunch of others. Lots of free time haha

I've learned Tears by taking the Chord chart and following Geddy's playing. It's an easy song, but I can still say I know a Rush song. Honestly, when you break it down, Geddy's lines aren't impossible, just difficult. Although I still never took the time to completely learn it, Tom Sawyer is actually a relatively easy song, just as an example.

I can play;

RUSH:
Working Man (not the entire solo section though.)

FLY BY NIGHT:
By Tor and the Snow Dog. (A few parts of the solo section trip me up.)

CARESS OF STEEL:
Bastille Day

2112:
2112 (all 21 minutes.)

Passage to Bangkok

A FAREWELL TO KINGS:
(Most of) Closer to the Heart

Xanadu

HEMISPHERES:
La Villa Strangiato

PERMANENT WAVES:
Spirit of Radio

Freewill

MOVING PICTURES:
Limelight

Red Barchetta

Tom Sawyer (I am in the process of re learing this one, as I have changed my technique since I last played it.)

(In a somewhat slower temp than the recording) YYZ

I don't think that it's bad at all to devote time to one bassist if it makes you better in the end or teaches you something you didn't know before.

Very, very good! Now you need to learn this!

Time learning to play Rush is time well spent. If you can play their material, then you can probably play most anything you put your mind to in the future. But, remember, there is a LOT to learn and dedicating yourself that much to only one band, while fun, might not make you into one of the most well-rounded musicians out there. I spent so much time learning how to play like Geddy that I had to UN-learn how to play like Geddy once I started gigging because most situations do not call for that style of play. Just a thought.

Actually, one of the best things I did, as a musician, was to dedicate myself to learning as much of the Motown catalog as possible. Not only was it helpful to learn these songs that are still insanely popular 40+ years later so I could actually play then when/if requested, but it helped me to learn to appreciate the beauty of executing a simple bassline well. Lots of bass players can play a song like My Girl without focusing on the groove, timing, Jamerson's transitions between the chords and perfectly placed ghost notes. But, when you learn how to do all those things well and apply them to your own playing, you will be a much better player and have a much more realistic chance of scoring a well-paying gig. You will be asked to do those kind of things professionally long before you are asked to play any Rush tunes.

Don't misunderstand, the guitarist I play with and I LOVE to run through as many Rush songs at practice as time allows for. We even try to stump each other by learning some of the lesser known tunes and seeing if the other one can figure it out. So, I understand the obsession. Just don't make your focus too narrow and you'll be fine.
