Rotos, mids, distortion, LOUD.

Sounds like fingers. Ox had a heavy "banging" style of playing the strings and it's prevalent there for sure.

That's a pick (probably discarded toward the end).

Ox would usually play "My Generation" with a pick during this era.

He has referred to it as his "typewriter method".

The first I ever saw him do it was in the late '80s; I don't remember seeing him do it before then.

He did both pick & fingers alot in those days.
I used to see them a lot live back in the 60's/early 70's.He got more into fingers/tapping as he got into more modern tone(Alembic) basses although he finger & tapped his Fenderbirds.

He used both in those days, check out footage from the Isle of Wight shows, they were recorded in the same time-frame as Leeds.

Except that the writer claims there are only three great Who albums and leaves out "Who Sells Out". He's a Harvard prof, I may have to stop by and play that one for him.

Used both a pick and fingers.

Here's AWESOME vid of "A Quick One" from the Rock 'n' Roll Circus:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjHe9EYdy-Y

Starts the tune with fingers, then grabs a pick.

Closeup of him using a pick, and one stuffed into his pickguard at 3:02.

Damn... such an awesome vid. In their prime at the top of their powers.

+1 - the writer really gets at how/why Moon's unusual drumming style worked, and what part it played in Who music. He was indispensable, and the Who really lost its mojo when he died, IMO.

Yes ... on most of the tracks ... You can really hear it on "Magic Bus" ... He did fingerstyle on some like "Young man blues"
