Did the grateful dead have a bass player?

I watched their "Touch of Grey" video and I couldn't find a bass player, but it sounds like there's a bass player playing on the D and G string a lot. Or is that a guitar playing low?

from my experience listening to GD, it sounds like a lot of the time Lesh is playing higher on the neck, which i think sounds cool...but yes, Lesh is definatly there, and in most of the GD songs Lesh has a really cool presence in the music

With all the other things going on in their music I think Lesh could get by playing higher than most could. At several times they had 7 members..........

... For the record I've only heard one song by them (that I'm aware of) and in the video they do not have a bassist (I looked for like, 20 minutes). I think they must've replaced it with a guitar since a bass is so heavy and the puppetier had to cope with all that weight... I should probably shutup...

don't judge a band off what you see on a music video...judging by that, there are no musicians in the Foo Fighters...never seen a guitar in the vids i saw

That, or look for his crazy Alembic with 20+ knobs.

Good one! You almost had me!

Jesus, of course the Dead had a bassist. Asking if the Dead had a bassist is akin to asking if the Who had one. They were doing basically the same thing on opposite sides of the world in two totally different bands, but either question puts you probably in the 3rd Circle of Hell or so.

The Lesh skeleton in the video is playing a six string bass, you might have thought it was a guitar.

Lesh wasn't a big proponent of pretending to play for music videos and such. In the 60s, Lesh played a broom in protest of pretending to play along to a prerecorded song (Cream Puff War, IIRC).

But I knew they had a bass player. OTOH, I wish I would have asked such an inflammatory question.

Check it out, one of my cohorts back at Syracuse University actually applied for a sound engineer position with the Dead, Lesh specifically. Billy ended up at Hughes Electronics, but in the course of his app, we checked out the spohisitcation of Phil''s setup. Man, he was way into it, deep, white noise, pink noise, all sorts of esoteric EE stuff. This is circa 1982.

Yeah, I'm an old F.
