his bass was defretted, so yes. the filler usually makes some kind of visible mark no matter how much you try to get it to match.

They were there but I don't think he ever needed them. Maybe for a quick reference, but other than that I doubt he payed attention to them.

What basis for this assertion do you have other than the fact that you idolize the man?

Well, I'm not a major Jaco- head, but most of the footage I've seen of him playing is not of the furrowed- brow, staring at the fretboard variety. He was a very entertaining player live, looking at the audience, bopping around, etc. That was part of the "bass genius" gig- how easy he made it look.

On his dvd he says it made playing in tune easier - i would assume he meant when he was starting off.

Need a fire? Out of wood? Start a thread w/the word *Jaco* in it; flames inevitably ensue.

He also added markers on harmonic spots so I guess he found them somewhat useful.

Ok, my bad. The fret lines and dots were on his fingerboard.
If the question is " Did Jaco use fret lines?"

I'd say he had no choice but for them to be on his fretboard. Did he use them as in for help or reference with intonation? Maybe.

Could Jaco play a fretless without lines and dots?
I'm sure he could.

And yes. I do idolize the man. His talent, not his problems.

On his Modern electric bass video he talks about practicsing on a fretted and playing on the frets....on the same video he plays Jerry Jemmot's custom made fretless without fretlines. So Yes, and Yes, and Yes to your three questions

Because IMO/IME, it/he is a very polarizing subject. Really.

Jaco defretted the bass himself, filled the voids with wood putty and epoxied the fretboard after. So, the lines were there-whether or not he needed them is open discussion. I think that bass in the Modern Electric series was made for Jaco by a boutique builder, they also made him a fretted one.

Towards the end of his life a company (I forget which) made him two basses, one fretless and one fretted. I saw a picture of him playing the fretless and there were no fret markers. I think you could have given Jaco a 40 octave neck and 70 strings and he would have known where he was goin'

Jaco at one point said he defretted the bass himself, and on other occasions said he got it that way. My sense is that most Jacorians lean toward the latter version of the Bass of Doom story, but I don't know if this issue has been definitively determined.

Jaco didn't NEED the fretlines. Period.

I base this on watching him as recently as last night on my old copy of "Modern Electric Bass" where he plays "continuum" on what looks like a very boutique unlined fretless bass.

He also had a fretted maple P bass neck on his Fender which usually had the fretted Jazz neck.
