Did you catch the Motown show at the White House last night?

Very strange show... Cheryl Crow... a Jonas????

Reggie McBride played bass. He's really a fine, fine player but, with his rounds, active pick up, and B string, he was in the wrong place.

What would Sir James have thought? Where were you Bob Babbit?

Cheryl Crow?

Sheryl Crow once sang back-up in Michael Jackson's '80s band. I guess that's close enuff for Jazz.
...maybe Joan Osborne was booked elsewhere?

I think she also played with Lionel Ritchie when he was at Motown (I don't know if he still is.)

Thought it was all in the hands?

I watched it just long enough to see a close-up of the bassist -- which took like 4 or 5 songs -- because sonically I was thinking "something's wrong". As soon as I saw a modern ERB I figured "yup, that's what's wrong." Nothing against modern ERB's, mind you...I own several. But it just didn't sound like Motown.

And I thought Sheryl Crow did a suprisingly good job of emulating a young Michael Jackson's vocal timbre and formants. Not at all what I expected from her, even though I knew she'd toured as his BG singer.

Tradition is not much respected these days in America. That's all I'll say.

I thought it was bad. The band played OK, but synth horns? At the White House? Can't you get some horns? And a Jonas brother? I realize it's a "salute" to Motown, but come on.

Maybe that could have gotten Sharon Osbourne to sing.

While we are on Motown, Smokey Robinson hasn't aged well -- anybody catch him on live at Daryl's House? He was never a very good singer, but he is so bad now it's embarrassing! Sorry Smokey, I know you wrote some nice stuff and were important behind the scenes, but I don't think god put you here to be a front man

***easy on the rude, rant-like trolling and political talk***- j-raj

Otherwise, the band was good and tight. The bassist had foam under his strings for the thumpy sound. It was exciting enough for the White House. Yes I thought a Jonas Brother being there was really pathetic. I'm glad they got Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder to get up and sing their own tunes. I was kind of heart sick to see Martha Reeves singing...while she was very talented, she's lost her voice in her old age. I understand her and Berry Gordy aren't on the best of terms. Then again, so are many of the 60's Motown artists.

I wanna know when they're gonna do a Stax Tribute.

Speaking of amazing singers... has anyone heard how Aretha Franklin is doing these days?

Last I had heard, not too well.

I have never really enjoyed listening to men sing in throaty Falsetto. It makes me tingle in the wrong places

Aretha is doing well. Especially after her recent ailment that put her in the hospital.

Aretha was/is so great. She and Chaka are two of the greatest female soul singers we have seen!
