Do you consider yourself under-rated or over-rated?

When people hear you play, do you think that they don't appreciate you, or do they maybe like your playing too much?
Are you happy with what people think of your playing?

Voted overrated: A bunch of people think I'm good, but that's just because I'm one of the first bassists they've paid attention. Friends and friends of friends mostly... it's like, to someone who's never heard the greats, yeah, I'm OK. But in the grand scheme of music, I'm a total bum. No modesty here, I'm just not that great.

Most who hear me are not musicians. They just know I'm playing music.

I wouldn't dare say that I'm the next great unknown bass player, but I'm definitely good and well known for my playing in my area. I 'm ok at slap, and finger style, so I mostly play with a pick. Although I have built a very good reputation here, I'll always have room to improve, and every now and then I find a bass player that blows my mind, so that keeps me humble and keeps me from getting a big ego. But I do love running circles around my guitarist from time to time lol.

Last time I looked the guys had changed their banners from 'clapton is god' to "Delberthot is god"

I mainly play in a wedding band so most of the crowd are drunk. Occasionally you get some very drunk guests who come up to you with the classic line - "I used to be in a band".

I love it when someone comes up to me and tells me that they thought I was good. It used to happen to me a lot when I was younger but not so much now.

Now I am back playing in a rock band I can appreciate the praise.

I must say that I am not big headed in the slightest - I just enjoy playing and would play every night if I could.

The last gig we did was one where everyone was a musician.

The promoter/bar owner came up to me at the end of the night and said that i had annoyed (in a good way) a lot of the bass playing fraternity because apparently they were all looking and wondering how the hell I was able to play the way I could.

I found it funny. I get a lot of enjoyment knowing that someone appreciates what i have played

+2.

The drummer from the old band that broke up acrimoniously, who is a goddamn virtuoso in every way, is still in contact with me, and we're jamming a bit and generally just hanging out before I leave for college. He's played with some big names for a teenager (Copeland, Reba, Gene Simmons), and he tells me that I'm his favorite bassist. I find it disconcerting. I'm finally learning the fretboard now, after all.

I'm just guessing he hasn't played with enough bassists.

I too think I'm overrated.

People always tell me I'm really good and this and that and blah blah. I don't think I suck, at all... but I need t0 work on A LOT of things as a bassplayer.

I'm way over-rated. Theres a straight up bassman5000 that takes lessons with the same person I used to take lessons with. Hes been taking lessons for years, while I took them for a week or two when I was starting out. No one has heard me play, but everyone assumes I rival his greatness since we had the same teacher.

I'm overrated. I play scales to warm up and non musicians think I am "Shredding". My drummer always puts me on the spot during gigs and makes me solo. It doesn't help at all that I'm 18 and I look 12 years old.

overrated,

if you can play anything but the root bass, people are impressed not only with the ability, but with th notio in general

what? you can play chords on a bass?
what? you can tap on bass?
what? harmonics?

a friend of mine (who is amazing) told me that it's not about being better, it's about doing things that people arent use to seeing

oh well

Overrated: I jump around a loton stage, banging on stuff, tipping over monitors, so people think i look cool and think i play great. A also have a load of stompboxes and bassplayers in my scne usually just use cable into amp.

+1 that's exactly why i consider myself over-rated ,and also when people see a moderately fast modal run they think it's amazing for some reason...

I'm probably overrated. I play in a hardcore/metal band, and most bassists in my genre are relegated to background positions and mixed out of the audible spectrum of the music and used mostly to thicken gutiars. I know how to EQ myself so I can be heard, use a handful of effects on a regular basis, and I play more than the root notes, so people often think that I am better than I am. I certainly don't suck, but I'm not a fantastic player.

I think that it boils down to people generally under-rating bassists and thinking that you can't do a lot of stuff on bass (pinch harmonics, tapping, use effects, etc.), so when they see someone doing any of those things, they often think that he or she is some sort of a virtuoso who is breaking new ground for the instrument.

i'm overrated
everyone's all "OH GOD! HAVE MY BABIES"
...
then again, i AM the only one of my brothers that hasn't been disowned by my parents for playing an instrument.
