Put aside other advanced techniques, put aside slap and stuff. Do you guys think the previous 2 can fingerstyle faster than Sheehan? |

And with Victor, it's hard to decide what to call slap vs. fingerstyle since he can play scales and lines with his vicious double thumb/double pop.
I don't doubt that Victor & Billy would have a lot of fun together. |

Maybe Sheehan has faster fingerstyle...when it comes to playing pentatonic or over one chord. Jaco and Victor can play fast, OVER CHANGES.
But does any of this matter? I feel like I'm in the late 80s again."Yngvie is faster than Vai."
I like chops and fast playing. I even like to do it myself, but to sit around and rate who's faster, its like we're clicking the stop-watch at the Olympics.
How about which of those three is the best composer.

over-rated after only hearing one song
Nothing against Sheehan(he's a MONSTER)/Talas, but Jaco's
and Wooten's comps are a lot more tasty. |

Back in my day, there used to be something called 'speed' & 'usable speed'.

And Victor is just blistering fast playing pentatonic.
Personally, I just don't like Sheehan at all. Not my style

All I know of Sheehan is what you can find on youtube.com. He certainly can handle the bass. But a lot of this type of playing, or shredding, is patterns up and down the neck, written down (maybe not literally), and rehearsed over and over. Add some fuzz and it seems faster. It consists of a lot of tricks, which is ok since it's all about showing off and make the crowd go wild, but it's not as hard as you might think (relatively speaking).
Anyway, take a look at the video below. If it isn't enough for you, I can assure you he can pluck a lot faster than on this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4husAmhq78 |

Im really inexperienced but i gotta admit im impressed by those kinda shredding stuff....so you cant really blame me. I admit that sheehan solos get boring after awhile but theyre pretty cool when in small doses.
Anyways I dont think sheehan rehearse any of his solos at all. He said an interview he just goes to stage w/o his head and play whats in his mind in the heat of the moment |

His solo in "The Riddle" is actually faster that anything Yngwie has done (source: Total Gutiar Magazine: Fastest Players of The 80's).
However, to dismiss Vai on the grounds that he can play fast is ridiculous. That would be totally disregarding his compostional abilities and utterly unique and lyrical phrasing. Whereas Yngwie found himself a niche early on and has operated there ever since (still to much fan applause), Vai has evolved contastly while maintaining his own idenity as a musician.
I find those who pigeonhole Vai as a "speed" player utterly ludicrous. What, do they just tune out when a slow number of his comes on (off the top of my head: Whispering a Prayer, For The love of God, Blue Powder). Sure, he may play some fasts licks in them but they are essentially "slow" tunes.
rant over. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
