I mean I find him good but I just don't see such a big deal with his playing, his tone is meh and his playing well kinda bores me a bit. I find him kinda over hyped, not saying he's bad just thinking there is so much love for him on this board but I just don't see that big of a deal. Anybody else agree? |

IMHO, I agree. I don't personally like Jaco THAT much. Now, I'm getting my flame suit on and ready to go here.
Why?
Becuase I think he's overhyped. Sure, I know hes a great player, He's revolutionized bass playing and all that. But I just don't like him all that much also. His playing does kinda bore me. Don't call me some young kid whos learning. I have listened to jaco, I've listened to that genre of music. I know what I like, and what I don't like. Just becuase im young, doesn't mean I don't know anything. For some of you older guys, name the difference between a heterotroph and an autotroph. Don't know the answer, Hmm I guess you must be old then and not know anything about what your talking about.
That being said, I do in fact like feildy (KoRn).

Last year I went to the music store and picked up a few Weather Report albums and a couple Jaco compilation albums to see what all the hype was about. I enjoy the music, but not enough to make me want to hail him as the pioneer of all that is bass like some. The farty tone of the fretless is not my personal favorite. I'd rather have the groin punch of some funky slap tone!
Luckily we have a HUGE assortment of music available to us, and searching through it and discovering something new (or old) that just works for you is magic. If something is not to your liking, then so be it.

He is a heck of a technical player, I'd give him that. But listening to him play (not when he is with another band) is like listening to blues guitarist wank all over himself. It just gets old, quick.

That said it's perfectly fine that Jaco isn't your thing but part of it really may be an age thing. Its not so much about hearing a large variety of music though. Personally, I think its more related to how people tend to calm down later in life. It's very rare for young people to be into jazz and more mellow music.
That said I'm by no means old, but I think people may be misinterpreting what was being implied about being young and not appreciating Jaco's playing.
Also I have to ask, is it Jaco's playing that you don't appreciate, or the music around it? |

His worst bass line ever is still better thank fieldy's best.
I just sorta like Jaco . only because hes not my style however at least i can recognize talent when i see it.
and even though i like korn i really don't think fieldy is a talented bass player by any means.

I can absolutely understand why someone may not like Jaco that much, simply because they dont enjoy the style of music he played, but let me assure you....his impact on bass playing is paralleled only by Jamerson and Larry G!
When I was younger and I first started playing bass, I hated Jazz, espescially fusion, but after I kept listening to him....one day I just realized how amazing he really was.
He did stuff that no one else even came close to doing...he was light years ahead of everyone else playing bass at the time....
Still dosent mean youre gonna like his stuff though. Its a matter of taste, but he is a bass pioneer! And he is worth loving simply because of that. |

Why was the music that he made ever created? He is to music as '94 Dodge Caravans are to automobiles. I don't get it. I'd much rather be rocking out to the who than hitting the books with whatshisface. |

20 years ago, I hated prog rock, blues and jazz. I played only punk rock with pick and thought everyone that didn't do that was a woose.
Guess what I play now......furthermore I wish I hadn't been so dismissive in my youth.
There is good in all genres of music if you shut any of them out, you will be only part of what you could have been.

It's just musical. Plenty of folks, young and old, don't like the flavor of jazz that Jaco delivers. Nor does his style speak to them. That's cool. At least you gave a good listen and understand that props are due.
I am a hardcore jazzbo and found myself downloading My Chemical Romance. All of their songs! 10 years ago I would tell you to pi$$ off if you asked me to give a listen.
Being open is a great thing.
OBTW I did listen to Korn and ummm well Fieldy is uhhh well uhhh ok I guess.
