Does anyone else think Wooten is over-rated?

I know I may seem crazy to some Wooten fans but is there anyone else out there that thinks that Wooten isn't really playing bass? Sure he plays the bass instrument but I have yet to hear a song in which he takes the role of the bass and aids the drums in maintaining rhythm. It might just be me but he seems to be attempting to take on the role of a guitar, and it just doesn't seem like he is a true bassist. I may just be old-fashioned but playing the bass the way he plays it seems like he should just go out and buy a guitar. I appreciate all the greats, but I don't see what the buzz is about Wooten. Anyway I just wanted to see if this was one of those ideas that is just totally out there.

I kinda agree, but I also don't see the greatness of Jaco...yet.

All I hear from these guys are notes that're way too high pitched to be basses...for me anyways

you haven't listened to wooten then. Try listening to him in a band session, not doing his solo stuff or on a solo tour. He is a very solid bass player, he knows when to just play roots and how to groove. It just so happens he also knows how to expand the horizons of bass playing in his own apporpriate setting.

Well, at least one person supports my idea
I haven't listened to much of Jaco, but the few songs I have heard have still sounded like the bass. But Wooten distorts the instrument so much that it doesn't sound natural, nor does it even sound like a bass.

Duker can you tell me one song in which he takes the role of the bass, I geuss I haven't listened to a lot of the stuff in which he plays with the band. I have listened to one song, sadly I forget the name, but I only heard him playing his solo style.

most flecktones stuff victor just holds down the groove most of the time, but he also does do the solo stuff that you don't like, but usually in 4 bar exchanges with bela and stuff like that.
