The Doors: bass tracks

Sign in to disble this ad
Several years ago, I read "no one here gets out alive" which is a biography of Jim Morrision. I think I remember it mentioning that the doors did a few tracks with a bassist. Also, when you listen to a song like L.A. Woman, You'd swear it was a bass guitar. Does anyone know the facts? And if so, who was the bassist?

Apart from the first self-titled album, all the other studio albums were recorded with a bass guitar. LA Woman being one of them, of course.

Ray still wrote most of the bass parts and when they played live he'd play the infamous fender rhodes bass.

Jerry Scheff , former bassist with Elvis , played on the entire LA Woman album. On every studio album there was a real bassist. Manzerek played keyboard bass live , but likr I said on most all songs there was a real bassist. Harvey Brooks played on A Soft Parade . Doug Lubahn was problably the closest the Doors ever got to haveing a perment bassist . He played on tons of their albums. If you ever listen to the song "The Soft PArade" he plays that line , his lines groove and bounce around everywhere.

Lonnie Mack, the famous blues guitarist, actually played bass on some of Morrison Hotel.

Yup.

During the break in Roadhouse Blues you can hear Morrison saying, "Do it, Lonnie, do it".

I think that Lubahn was the first bassist in Dreams followed by Will Lee. I might be wrong though . Ahh yes CArol Kaye . SHe is a great talent but seems to be a little low on remember what sessions she has really done. She claims to have played on Light My Fire. The Doors usually credited the bassists and she is no where to be found on the credits. CArol also said that none of the Doors really played on their albums , that it was all session musicians. Believe what you want I guess

I thought Robbie Krieger played at least some bass on those albums. Could be mistaken, though.

On a side note, Jerry's son, Jason Scheff, has been on bass and vocals with the rock band 'Chicago' since 1986.

Good bass playing must run in that family

i've heard that carol kaye can be, uh, "difficult."

"CArol also said that none of the Doors really played on their albums , that it was all session musicians. Believe what you want I guess.."
if she said this she is clearly an idiot. that just seems like a stupid thing to say.

I think Carol Kaye may have played on one of the cover versions of "Light My Fire"...., Jose Feliciano's maybe? Worth investigating for sure...
