Anyone have any idea how on earth to get this tone?? Phenomenal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pl9F2yLXyK8

The techniques he uses are pretty obvious. More curious about settings and whatnot. Insane.

My apologies if this is in the wrong section.

A great solo part for analysis is at around 2:08

Here's a video of me with his basic set up:

Is that close to his sound to anyone else? Or am I just too prideful of my equipment? hahaha

I saw and met him at NAMM a few years back, super cool guy and a super bad**s as well. Bass AND drums at the same time? Sheesh!! What I mean by that is, he played BOTH (yes at the same time) when I saw him. Very cool.

Digging in with an ebony board (that's the ping.. sounds like ebony... not sure though), and a PJ set-up (you can hear that P in there with the thicker mids). Seems like he's favoring the neck P pickup a bit also (lots of neck pickup in his tone). Finally, an active preamp buffering the signal gives the top end (even with a P pickup) a bit of hi fi sheen.

Not my thing, and the tone is not particularly 'unique' IMO.

Great player though!

Very insightful! Exactly the kind of answer I was looking for. I understand tone but I don't always understand what creates it short of its components (player and gear). What I'd like to learn more about is what gear creates which tones. So your answer was very insightful.

Obviously a player with his talent will sound fabulous on any bass and with any rig, however, that particular tone really is driven by that particular Pedulla spec IMO. Also, sounds quite a bit like old school Bartolini pickups, which are warm, and while they have plenty of top end, the top end is a bit 'creamy and pingy' versus the more grindy, aggressive top end of, for example, jazz bass single coil pickups.

Assuming those are old school Bartolini pickups, that, combined with the unique pickup combination and placement (a P pickup in the neck position, and a hum cancelling J sitting almost right on the bridge) will also bring forward that 'fat low end with that modern ping up top and that space between the note thing', especially when combined with an ebony board (if again, I'm seeing what I think I'm seeing, and hearing what I think I'm hearing!).

KJung, definitely an ebony board there. I got to take a look at Dougs bass for a min at NAMM this last winter. That bass has been played!! Doug brings it. Wish I could have seen him up in L.A. yesterday.

Cool. It sure had that 'Bart with Ebony' tone, with that unusual P neck pickup and bridge J pickup placing rolled in. I couldn't see the board clearly enough in the clip to know for sure though.

What a player!
