What do y'all think about his style/technique? Does it differ much from Rex Brown?

The whole thing was a sloppy mess, so I think he fit in fine.

I dunno; Rex really made Down II and III stick out from the original w/ his work... Pretty upset that he's gone but hey you can't get into catfights with Phil- he of anyone should know that!

Kill Devil Hill is mmkay but Down were just crushing it and I was pumped as hell for the new record to get written...

I spoke with Pat a little before he played an Outlaw Order show, he's a cool guy with pretty awesome chops. I think he'll fit just fine in Down. I've been a HUGE Down fan for years and years now. I actually think Pat is a much better fit than Rex.

I say Kudos to Pat.

Catfights with Phil? What exactly happened?

My understanding was that Phil and the others thought he should cool it on drinking after the whole pancreatitis deal and Rex wouldn't do it. Was there more to it or is that what you're referring to? J/w

Does anyone know what model ESP bass that is he is playing? I really like the sound of it and thought it was a Surveyor at first but checking their web site, the controls seem to be different unless that one is custom.

I think he fits in well with the band. He's definitely different than Rex since he plays finger style and Rex has a much different tone but they keep posting videos online of clips from their shows and I like what I see.

I think he fits in great tonally, once the band kicks in.

Eyes Of The South is one of the best songs Down ever wrote. I hope they tour through the US one more time before they hit the studio. Gives me goosebumps.

Phil seems like he is a big fan of Ghoust (as he should be.) At one of the festivals (was it Download?) they had some of the Ghouls come out and jam with them during Bury me in Smoke which was really cool.

This one. Same show as the link in the first post. Heaviest band in the world, IMO. They out-Sabbath Black Sabbath IMO.

Unfortunately, this one isn't as good quality but this is the one I was talking about.

Down -Bury Me In Smoke (feat. Ghost) Download Festival 2011 - YouTube

Seems like they have been getting a bunch of different bands to come out and jam with them during the last song which is really cool. I am bummed I missed Down when they came around here so I am hoping them come back.

I really wanted to see Ghost in NYC but they had to pull out at the last second due to problems getting Visa's which sucked.

Oh, here is closer footage shown from the side of the stage. Man, that one Ghoul is tall:

I don't have personal knowledge of what happened besides the things I read about Rex falling out of the good graces of Phil.
Coming from Mr. Anselmo, to say someone of Rex's stature in heavy music got kicked out of Down for excessively partaking in any recreational drinking makes not a lick of sense.
You know these guys were in Pantera, right??

It had to be something personal between the two for Rex to just be dismissed like that. Those guys have been bro's through the fights that split up Pantera and everything else in their musical career. Still drinking after a show IMO wouldn't come remotely close to triggering this, but again it is Phil, so you really never know.

I'll wait for another record to put forth any judgment. A live Down mix isn't what I call "spectacular" for bass! Actually (and surprisingly) the bass tone has been great on all 3 albums no matter who's played, so whomever now has the chair, I hope that continues.

Well he did have pancreatitis from the drinking, and from what I read all the other members were concerned because of his health and his family should something happen to him. That's why I was confused when someone called it a catfight.

Doesn't really matter anyways in the grand scheme of things.

Down has been one of my favorite bands since I was a teenager and although I am disappointed to see Rex go, as a finger player I am excited to hear what Mr. Bruders brings to the band.

I was a real huge fan of NOLA because of the sludgey, southern rock inspired sound it had vs more Led Zeppelin kind of feel they had going on after Rex joined. Hopefully their new stuff will be a return to that seeing as both Pat and Todd Strange played in Crowbar...either way I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

your "fingers vs pick" nonsense makes me pretty much assured you're still a "teen"...
if that's the only way you can define a person you "like" or are "interested" in, then it's hard for me to take them seriously as being any better/worse.

Well, he's certainly got all the cliche stuff going on: silly beard, long hair, bass too low-slung, **** band...

I just saw them last saturday. He didn't stand out as particularly awesome, but pulled of the parts perfectly well. He's still the new guy, so I don't expect him to go stage diving, or get on the mic between songs. As far as I understood, Rex's health issues made it a mutual decision that it would be a good thing for him to no longer tour with down. Too much temptation. He is perhaps more addicted to booze than phil ever was to smack. They seem fairly sober now. (relatively)
