I'm looking into buying a drum machine to kill time while I'm not with a band, looking to spend around 250 but would spend a little more if reviews aer good, anybody have any suggestions on any particular machine?

I've played with Boss DR Rhythm 110 & 220 drummachines, we were also using an older black and orange type of Boss DR without LCD screen before that. They're pretty easy to program. There's a whole load of newer and more sophisticated ones around that you can check. They're nice for practice, or as a stand-in when the drummer has flue,
also good to combine with the drummer (hand claps, strange fast beats & stuff).

The Korg Electribes are pretty great. Really good interface.

Don't know the price in US, but boss DR670 is pretty good machine, with nice drum sound, especially snare.
Easy to program. have a listen on myspace in my sig, i recorded the "jaco vibe" with.

I didn't like the display of the boss DR670. At certain angles it was hard to read so I switched to DR880. The DR110 seems to be way easier to program than the DR670/880 but I dunno how it sounds.

The DR110 sound is basic, it's fairly electronic but not bad at all,
adding a Flanger or a chorus to it makes it breathe a bit more.
The DR220 has several versions, I'm not too fond of the electronic drum version of it, the acoustic drum version sounds a bit better to me.

Why spend that much? The Alesis SR-16 has been around forever, you can get them for about $100 and it does everything you want a drum machine to do. It has 18 different drum sets including TR808, it has pressure sensitive pads too.

I can see spending a lot for a drum machine if you are going to use it as your main recording drummer or whatever, but just for practice, the SR is totally adequate. Can probably get one for less on eBay.

Just my $0.02.
