Duck Dunn and Otis Redding

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm Listening to The Very Best of Otis Redding (Rhino)
And wondering if any tracks feature Donald "Duck" Dunn.

Here's the tracklist:

These Arms Of Mine
Pain In My Heart
That's How Strong My Love Is
Mr. Pitiful
I've Been Loving You Too Long
Respect
I Can't Turn You Loose
Satisfaction
My Lover's Prayer
Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)
Try A Little Tenderness
Shake
The Happy Song (Dum-Dum)
Tramp
(Sittin' On The) Dock Of The Bay
I've Got Dreams To Remember

Anybody have good disc reccomendations for studying Duck Dunn?

IIRC, Duck and Steve Cropper played on all those songs,
being the house band for Stax/Volt.

Otis was a class act. There is great film footage of him at
the Monterrey Pop festival in 1967, where he brought down
the house and pretty much spanked everyone, except maybe
the Who and Jimi.

Mick Jagger is reputed to have once said the he would never
want to come on stage after Otis. That guy knew how to
work a crowd.

I was guessing the same as Thor, but don't know for sure.

Otis is defiinitely one of my faves...died way too young. My dad listened to him constantly.

On Dock of the Bay, Steve Cropper posthumously produced
the album, and Packy Axton is on tenor sax.

Live in Europe, 1967 features Booker T and the MG's as his
backing vehicle, an articulate and poignant ensemble
that fit particulary well with Otis' smooth soul style.
Duck Dunn is also credited on this tour, as well as
Isaac Hayes, leading one to believe this band is also
the band that backs him so wonderfully at Monterrey.

Losing Otis was one of the great musical tragedies, one could
only image what a wonderful career the man would have
had.

RIP my man.

I like this thread.

Ok, let me tell you a story.

In the video I have of Monterrey Pop, Otis is performing
at night. He does a version of 'Shake', the old Sam Cooke song,
and just tears it up.

Then, he slows it down with 'Try a Little Tenderness.
He finishes the first verse. The bass and horns come
in for the bridge.

Baroom bamp, Baroom Bamp, BAROOM BAMP.

At this point he looks back to the band and calls,
'Do it just one more time just like that!'

And he yells
Oh _________ Oh _______ Oh
Baroom bamp, Baroom Bamp, BAROOM BAMP.

and he turns again and says a little louder
'Do it just one more time just like that!'

Oh__________Oh_________ Oh
Baroom bamp, Baroom Bamp, BAROOM BAMP.

He does this 2 or 3 more times progressing to a crescendo.

At this point, the crowd has gone from quiet to
'A Packers at home with a win' kind of roar.

He just takes the audience by the short hairs and yanks
them through to the next universe.

That moment never fails to stun me, even though I know
its coming. What a pro. I have never seen anyone work a
crowd that well. Just unbelievable.

With you my life, has been so wonderful .... I can't stop now.

There is a DVD out that has both Otis' and Jimi's complete Monterey performances. GET IT! Booker T and the MG's are tearing it up! They did a KILLER version of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" No wonder Jagger wouldn't want to follow Otis, he did their song better! Duck is driving the entire band and the sound mix is great! There is a nice little documentary about Otis and Phillip Walden in the package.

Oh yeah, Hendrix is alright, too...

Goto Memphis and visit the Stax Museum. That label was awesome and pumped out some of the most influential music of all time. Booker T and the MG's (Stax house band) was the engine room behind the sound. Otis and Booker T and the MG's were a power house during a live show.

"Do it one more time just like that" Great moment also IMO

There were a few more artists that they supported,
Carla Thomas, William Bell, Sam and Dave, The Mar-keys
and Eddie Floyd to name a few.

Atlantic had right of first refusal on all Stax releases.
Guess who produced Wilson Pickett's 'Midnight Hour'?

Yup. Steve Cropper. Wanna take a shot at who the
backup session guys are? Yup.

Wanna know why these songs are still getting
R-E-S-P-E-C-T 40 years later? The players.
You never heard a better horn section. My band
has a horn player, and Otis/Stax was the reason I fell
in love with the sound.

This is an amazing French site with transcriptions for many of the great bass players, as well as a discography of sorts. Duck Dunn's stuff features pretty heavily and is broken down by Otis/Booker/etc.

http://perso.orange.fr/freebasspart....ss_Players.htm

Music is in notation, not tab.

Thor/Loki,

That's a little pricey on the Amazon link. You got Newbury Comics' down there in RI? They have it for like $18.99 or something. I just got a new subwoofer for my main stereo, gotts throw that vid in!

They got one about a mile away, thanks for the tip.

Though that place will probably be a zoo this week.
But I will get that.

I have the old recording on vinyl, with Jimi on one side
and Otis on the other. Great record.

And they really tear up on the ending of Try a Little Tenderness iirc. The horns are just screaming and then they restart it and do it over. ONE MORE TIME JUST LIKE THAT!

Should be required listening for all musicians.
