Dude...Mike Huckabee really CAN get down on the bass!

Sign in to disble this ad
I went to a banquet tonight at which Huckabee was the speaker. Afterwards he stood in with the band and he pretty much ripped it up on the bass. No kidding...he was totally comfortable and clearly he's an active player. It was cool to see a former high profile politician who is an active bass player up there doin' that.

We need his pedalboard in the Pedalboards of the Stars thread.

Does anyone have any details about his rig?

His bass was a nice-looking J-bass but I was too far back to see anything else and it was probably a loaner anyway.

note : this thread is about a public figure (politician) who is a bassplayer.

as long as the topicality is restricted to his bass playing, this thread is fine.

wandering into political zone will incur harsh penalties, however.

I think we're overlooking the vitally important fact that both bands feature decent-looking women w/nicely-displayed talents upfront.

Don't worry; I don't bust on no bass players.

Its the same woman isn't it? they look a lot of like. I'm really not sure about his bass playing can't really hear it in either of those videos (and its not original) and he surrounds himself with people younger than him so he is sort of awkward on stage. He is afraid to get into it, it looks like.

In the "More Than a Feeling" video, he gets completely lost going into the bridge right before the solo (he flubs a few notes, stops playing for a sec, then appears to refer to a cheat sheet on the amp). Can't tell whether the male vocalist is shaking his head in disgust or if he's just a bobble-head

While he may not be too flashy, he can keep a solid groove. Of course, it's not his day job, so I wouldn't expect him to be too extravagant with his playing.

I keep finding videos of him and he seems to always be using a different bass. You are probably right about them being loaner. I'm curious if the rig he uses in the Freebird video is his own gear, though.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkeflmkFCj0

It looks like he uses a Genz Benz head and SWR Goliath cabs. I cannot figure out what that bass is, though.

LOL. There is a video of him playing bass at West Music in Coralville, IA. That is about a five minute drive from where I live right now. I haven't been in to that store (but I have been to the Cedar Rapids West Music). I'll have to sneak in there one of these days.

He is a wild man.

+1 Solid but extremely fundamental. Seems like a mostly roots and fifths type player. Nothing wrong with that. Nice to see a public figure playing bass, and Huckabee is much better on bass than Clinton was on sax! Still, it was cool seeing Clinton playing an instrument back in the day as well.

Green River sounds cool as a 3-piece arrangement.

I thought I saw Huck playing a Tobias on his show a couple of times, he might actually own that one.

Hiya,

I watched his show a few days ago, George Jones was making an appearance. Huck stood in playing a Tobias 4 for 2 songs.

Couldn't hear him in the mix that well, almost non existent at times. What I did hear was a soft mellow tone (think P w/ flats and both knobs rolled off about 1/3). Simple songs, fundamental root-5th playing, didn't get lost.

Jumped up and down the neck a lot playing mostly the A string, maybe somebody mentioned A is a good country key...

Tom
