The early 1980's Geddy switched to Fender Jazz myth

Sign in to disble this ad
Everybody says Geddy switched to the Fender Jazz bass on Moving Pictures but ...
Exit Stage Left (live Moving Pictures tour dvd) is ALL Rick ...
Beyond The Lighted Stage (new documentary dvd) has Geddy playing ALL Rick all the way through Signals even ...
Tom Sawyer studio video ... Rick
It's Rick, Rick, Rick until Steinberger.
Then I think wait a minute and search YouTube ... lots of peoples live videos ...
Search Youtube Rush live 1981 - Rick
Search Youtube Rush live 1982 - Rick
Search Youtube Rush live 1983 - Rick
Wall to wall Rick ...
Search Youtube Rush live 1984 - Steinberger begins (and wow did his live tone suffer).
I believe I read Geddy say somewhere that he used the the Jazz on Tom Sawyer but I never thought it sounded like it ...
I don't buy the early 1980's Geddy switch to Jazz myth. Nothing supports it.

Early on Geddy played and recorded with P basses. He has a long history with Fender. And if you watched the documentary, you'd clearly see the P.

He used the Jazz (which he got at a pawn shop) for recording, but not live, until later. The MP album has a mixture of Jazz and Ric, but I believe he used the Jazz for parts of PeW as well.

PLENTY of evidence that supports the use of the Jazz.

People don't always schlep the same instruments they record with on the road, either.

Quite frankly, Ged's tone is somewhat similar no matter what bass he used. Even with the Wal, you can tell it's Geddy.

Have you seen this video? Geddy clearly says that he used his Fender Jazz for "Tom Sawyer" (and other relevant info about searching for something different to the typical Rickenbacker sound). Many people believe that it's the Ric because of the video, but the fact that the Ric appears there doesn't imply that it was the bass used for the album track.

I don't know why people associate what they see in video's or live to what was used in the studio. Video's are about image. Live is about live sound. Studio is about studio.

Just like stage sound is different from monitor sound.

There is a video out called Rush, beyond the lighted stage. I caught it on VH1 Classic over the last weekend. It went from the beginning to the present. Plenty of great footage. Anyway, Geddy explains it. Basically no one was happy with the sounds from the 80s. Keyboards and all that. Alex was unhappy he had to compete with that sonic space and the fans put up with it. At some point, not sure the album, they got a new producer who wanted raw rock and told geddy to use his jazz bass. he wouldn't let them use any any effects. Alex was pissed that he couldn't use reverb. Anyway, that is what this documentary said, straight from the sources.

It was 1993's "Counterparts" and the producer was Peter Collins, but he wasn't "new" to the band. Actually, he also produced two completely different (stylistically and sonically) Rush albums: "Power Windows" and "Hold Your Fire". IIRC, the Wal bass used for "Power Windows" was property of Collins.

If you're counting music videos than The Enemy Within must be on the 4001 even though it was recorded with the Steinberger.
I remember reading that starting from Permanent Waves he was playing the Jazz bass.

TSOR - Jazz
Freewill - 4001
Jacob's Ladder - 4001
Entre Nous - Jazz
Different Strings - 4001
Natural Science - 4001

Same with Moving Pictures.
Tom Sawyer - Jazz
Red Barchetta - 4001
YYZ - Jazz
Limelight - Jazz
The Camera Eye - 4001
Witch Hunt - Jazz
Vital Signs - Jazz

Even Signals had the switch up.
Subdivisions - 4001
Analog Kid - 4001
Chemistry - 4001
Digital Man - Jazz
The Weapon - Jazz
New World Man - Jazz
Losing It - 4002
Countdown - 4001

He did use the Jazz live in 81 and 82. YYZ live was on the Jazz.

He also used the 4002 live at least once.

Cool pics. I've never seen pictures of Ged playing the Jazz live back then. Cool pic of the 4002 live too.

And it wasn't the producer, it was the engineer. They called him "caveman" for a reason.

I attended the Rush concert in support of Moving Pictures album in 1981 in St Louis. I distincly remember Geddy playing the Jazz bass on YYZ and Red Barchetta. Possibly something from side II of the album (Camera Eya of Witch Hunt) too. The rest was the Ric. The concert was fairly close to the subsequent live album, Exit Stage Left.

What bass is Geddy using??
That's during YYZ on 3/1/81 at the old Chicago International Ampitheatre.
I know.
I filmed this.

Geddy used the Fender Jazz Bass for some Permanent Waves tracks too.

Plenty supports it.

All the things mentioned here so far.

The fact that Geddy himself says so.

If you listen to the soloed bass tracks from Moving Pictures, you can clearly hear the difference betwen The Camera Eye/Red Barchetta and the other tracks.

Also, look at the pictures inside your Moving Pictures album. Geddy with the jazz bass.

Not a myth.
