The gigs are getting harder to get, now getting paid is harder to get. My brother just collected a check on his 8th attempt from a club we played a couple of weeks ago. And they had the cajones to ask him to hold it until Monday. I won't name the club, but he's been calling it the doo-doo club.
If we play there again (we are on the books for the remainder of the year) I will get there first and inform them we do not carry the first mic stand in until I get the check. At the end of the performance, they will be expected to cash said check before we tear down.
I'm a fair minded guy, and will bend over backwards to help a club out if they are having a hard time, but don't yank me around like I'm trying to collect a car payment from a ne'er do well brother in law.
Discuss? How are my East TN brethren faring with the clubs when it comes pay time?

When we play, we get paid with no hassle. Of course, we play a lot of fraternal clubs, % of door gigs, municipalities(chamber of commerce), civic clubs, etc. vs. straight night clubs. I'm sure I would react pretty badly should someone try to stiff us. I've heard of it happening at a restaurant nearby that wanted to book us. I told 'em "No Thanks" and why. Not sure I would have taken it if they had offered to pay up front because of the way other musician friends of mine had been treated there. "We didn't sell enough from the bar, so we can't pay you." That's when Richard would come unglued!

We played this event last year(twice) and they had a good turnout, but folks spent more time looking at the cars & trucks than listening to the band. Last year, we were set up on the Courthouse lawn. This year, we set up on the Courthouse lawn again, but much closer to the street. A world of difference! People actually stood around listening to the band and you could tell they were enjoying the music. Tip jar even netted gas money! PM me if you would like to know $, I don't mind. 2.5 hours is all we played (minus a 20 min. break). They want us again for later this summer, too!
This coming Saturday(18th) is our monthly Moose gig. I would like to invite any of you guys who aren't otherwise occupied, to attend. It's kind of a smallish place, but the people are very friendly. Just let me know so I can put you on the guest list, unless you are a Moose, then you won't need to be on the guest list!
Jeff (Roller), I was actually in Murvul on Saturday night. Took my family to the Parkway Drive-In. My 18YO daughter had never been to a drive-in movie and my wife thought it was a must before she moved away to college. I looked for Cancun after the movie to stop by and say Hello, but it wasn't on our route, and at 11:30 I wasn't looking to cruise around M'ville looking for it. We'll meet up soon enough.

I used to take my son and daughter to that one or the one in Rockwood when they were younger. I bought season passes so no matter how broke I was that week, if I had gas money we were going to the drive in. I would back my old chevy pickup into the slot, bring a mattress for the bed, a camping chair for me, a cooler full of drinks and a boom box and it was a party! By the time the second feature rolled around, the kids (plural, because my kids always brought at least one friend) were covered up and sleeping because that's back when it actually got cool when the sun went down and dew would fall.
Ahhh, memories! Thanks for bringing that one up oldschool!

Or is this the case? If it is, then either Talkbass members here in east Tennessee are not gigging, or the ones who are gigging are not members of Talkbass, or they are not posting here. I dunno!
Jeff, tell us about the Soul Driver performance at Cancun Saturday night.
I'm playing three theatre productions in late June and July. The first in Knoxville, second in Maryville, the third in Oak Ridge. Details for anyone who wants them! |

Please post details at least a few days in advance on here, I really want to come hear you play!
I think a lot of subscribers to this thread have an "aw shucks" attitude about posting shows, which may be typical of our breed. I sincerely hope my posts don't come across as "hey come look at all the neat crap I bought" but in a way, I want fellow bass players to "come look at all my neat crap"!
I want to desperately get out and see other bass players, good bands, crappy bands, what have you. I zero in on the bass player regardless and mentally steal stuff I see and hear, which in turn makes me a better bassist.
In answer to the original question, we had a fabulous show, not many folks at 6pm when we started, but 7:30-8:00 the place started filling up and stayed until 11:00 when we quit. The trouble was (with any outdoor show this time of year) was the miserable heat! We started setting up at 4, so we were exposed to the sunlight and heat until 9 when the sun went down and it cooled off a tad. I think the crowd enjoyed it, they were very responsive and interactive, and the big draw for us there is the venue is so accomodating. They are extremely helpful and courteous and genuinely act like they want you there. If there were one gig I had to play for free, Cancun's would be it just because of their appreciation for what we do.

| | Slush Machine Detritus | | Join Date: Feb 2004 Location: Knox, Knox, who's there? | | Last week was really, really hot in ET to be playing any kind of outdoor gig. For those of you who didn't know, up until yesterday (June 12), we had highs in the 90's for a couple of weeks straight, along with our famous east Tennessee humidity.
Having said that, I do want to come down to hear Soul Driver at Cancun in Maryville the next time you guys do it. I'd like to get there early, sit at a real table, and enjoy some good Mexican, some Dos Equis, shots, and hear you guys play. I'd encourage all of you here in our thread to join me. It'd be a great chance for a party and a GTG! Jeff, let's talk it up here.
And no, Jeff! I am not going to get up onstage and play that fanned-fret Dingwall bass and make a dumbass of myself! Laughing- that still cracks me up that you asked me if I wanted to, on Cinco de Mayo! Actually, you know- I should have. That crowd was so drunk they would have loved it! Or just ignored me.
And I might bring my XZ-25 and hand it up there to you. Hey Jeff- Play THIS! (folks, he could, in a second!)

And, as soon as we can The Groove Circus will start gigging. We are half there w/ about 24 songs ready.

They're the best cabs I've ever owned (highly sought after) but too big for my 2 rig setup. I'm also selling my 2 Genz Shuttle 6.0s which paired perfectly w/ them. It's gonna be a sad goodbye but it's a must that I downsize my gig setup to accommodate a busier cover-band schedule (God willing we get booked!). Holler at me if you want to check anything out :-).

It's been a week or so since his post, so I thought I'd also throw in an update. I'm in the midst of tech week for the first of three theatre shows I'm doing through the end of July. I'll go straight from performances for the first into techs for the second one, and then right into techs for the third one after that.
I may regret booking myself so solidly, but man, I love playing every night!
Other developments for me, so more to come when I post next. In the meantime, let's hear from you guys here in East Tennessee! What all is going on? |

| | Forgiven | | Join Date: Dec 2007 Location: Maryville, TN | | | Well, I'm headed to my second annual DC area TB GTG this weekend. Jens Ritter was going to be the keynote speaker, but he suffered an ATV accident and does not have doctors permission to fly yet. He will still link up with us via webcam and give a tour of his shop. Makes me rethink selling my Ritter, its not clear yet if he will be able to rehab enough to build again, keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
Cancelled a buttload of gigs from a very shaky venue for the rest of the year. It was no biggie as we were able to turn around and rebook those dates and more. Knoxville area bands may PM me for more info about the venue, I don't go bad mouthing places even when they deserve it in a live forum. Bad karma.
Considering a name change for the band. Soul Driver has been a good vehicle and I think it's a cool name, but as I posed it on our FB page, there are a finite number of people in the area who know who Soul Driver is, and an infinite number of people who know our guitarist, so we are considering billing ourselves as "The Odell Brummett Band". If you have ever had the pleasure of meeting Odell you already know there is not a more "genuine" soul on the planet.
This was not his idea BTW, it was tossed about by my brother and myself. As everyone knows, all things end eventually, and it will be so with our merry little trio one day. When that day comes, it will be so much better for Odell as he also owns a recording studio. Marketability is where it's at.
And how is everyone elses week? Those of us in ET who still have the lights on that is?

We are playing a 50th anniversary party for our lead guitarist's in-laws. Won't pay much, but the spread of food is promising to be substantial! Then next Saturday, we are playing the VFW, Morristown's largest and best-attended venue.
I bought a set of Pyle subs off the internet last week and they came in yesterday. They were cheap($263 shipped) and they sure look it. Pretty sure how that's gonna turn out. The rest of the PA is good name brand stuff (Yorkville board and Yamaha mains and monitors.) Then today, I spied a pair of Yamaha subs on CL for $400 . Just my luck.......

Our guitarist is quite the ebay hound/sound engineer, he found these Renkus/Heinz monitors several months back and I have never used a set of monitors that perform better. I had never heard of them before, but because of their weight (I'm a wimp, I put them on a hand truck) I've taken to calling them Rectum/Heinys.
I love Yamaha PA speakers, but I've found myself reconing the speakers in more than one band over the years. Me and Orange Co. Speakers in CA are on a first name basis, they do great work and quick turnaround.

I wanted to say thank you for everyone's thoughts and prayers. It has now been almost 3 months that I have been battling this sickness that I have had. I returned to work for the first time last night (major struggle)!! Couldn't make it in tonight; but the doctors are saying it will just take time. I am hoping to get to play again in church this Sunday. If you guys have ever had to go without playing for any amount of time, you know what a struggle it is!! I hope to be able to start coming out to catch some shows from you guys soon (just as soon as my health allows it)!!! I play in my church band right now; that is all my health willl allow for the time being. I HOPE that I can one day again join another band and start gigging more again. I would love for any of you to come hear our band at my church (my church is different; we won't judge anyone; come as you are; I guarantee people will be glad to have you there). The church info is in my sig if anybody is interested I can get you more info!!!
I have a ton of gear for sale (that I really don't want to ship). If anybody is interested or knows anybody that might be, pm me. Here is some of what I have:
1. Warwick Bass Rig (Brand New; Never Used)
Extreme 10.1 Amp with two 4x10 Warwick Cabs
2. Fender MIA P-Bass Deluxe 2004 5 String
3. Fender BXR300C Head
4. SKB 12 Space Shock Rack
Lots of other miscellaneous stuff (rack cases; drawers; rack tuners; etc.).
I hope it is ok to mention that stuff here; if it is not, somebody let me know and I will take it off. I have the bass listed on Talkbass but the other stuff I just don't want to fool with shipping. Thanks guys!!!! |

The NV425 will have to be a pickup only or meet me deal since I only had one Berg box. I'm motivated and have just dropped my prices on the cab and my 2 Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0s. I'm also strongly considering selling my US Lakland Decade 4 strung BEAD.

How about combining them at least to start with, e.g. "Odell Brummett and Soul Driver", or "Soul Driver featuring Odell Brummett"? Seems like that would draw all your support and hopefully keep more of it intact if you ever decide to pursue different paths.
