I'm on the Tame The Hurricane Facebook page, although I have not seen you live as of yet. I own a small business, play in a band that has a relatively hectic schedule (gigs about 3x a month, and lots of rehearsal) and am raising a 12 year old daughter. I'm in gear 12-14 hours a day 7 days a week as a result.

What does make it easier is that I live in the Old City, so popping over to shows can be done on no notice. I missed you guys at PPub because I had my daughter that night (I'm divorced, she goes back and forth with my ex- who lives in N Knoxville).

Awesome, dude! I'll be sure to keep you posted on gigs so you can possibly check us out. We're actually trying to get a slot opening up for Moon Taxi at the Bijou in January. We were set to open for them at the Cider House earlier this month, but, as I'm sure you know, they and the Valarium went out of business.

That might have been a blessing in disguise, as a Tuesday night at the Cider House wasn't really a guaranteed crowd out to see you. Bijou would be, surely.

I'm out average 1 night a week, sometimes 2, to see bands but never anywhere outside downtown. I couldn't even guess what or when the last band I saw at a non-downtown venue might have been. I'm sure it's been years (though we've only been living in the Old City for the last 2 ...)

Moon Taxi gig at Bijou I will miss, unfortunately. I have a 2 night business trip to St. Louis on that Thursday and Friday and won't get back to K-town until the 19th.

Another gig update: Charlie has been kind enough to allow me to fill in tonight with Kudzu, they will be in Sweetwater at the Skyway tonight!

It's been several weeks since I've gotten to play out, so very much looking forward to the opportunity.

Anyone coming to or from Chattanooga to Knoxville needs to check this band out, they are seriously awesome! Well, they are with Charlie at the helm on bass, but you know what I mean!

Who is playing NYE in East TN and where? Looks as though I will be watching the ball drop at home for the first time in 5 years. Our band decided to set the bar pretty high price-wise for NYE and seems no one is willing to step up. We had some offers within $100 or so but sticking by our quote so far.

Admirable.

Too many clubs try to lock in NYE around spring to summer, and then try to re-negotiate the price around fall, and sometimes drop bands when something better falls in their lap.

And then, some clubs do a mad scamble to lock in "once or twice a year" acts for regular rates, and others expect because you have played a few shows that year to do a gig for the regular rate to "get exposure".

The last NYE gig I negotiated was two hours of back and forth with the venue telling me how bad business was, and telling me they could pick up the phone and have at least three bands willing to do it for free. I stuck to my guns and got what I thought was fair for both parties, but it reminds me of why I don't have garage sales.

Invariably, if you have a garage sale, someone will walk up to you holding something you paid hundreds for and offer you a quarter for it. That's when (in my mind) I smash it to the sidewalk and give them two bucks for the pleasure of denying them.

Oh, by the way, I have only had one garage sale in 30+ years, I either give stuff away or take it to goodwill.

Off topic, end rant/

Happy New Year everyone!

I am looking for any info from you guys in the Morristown area about a music store called
The Fret Store. I do art work and they have contacted me concerning hanging my work in a gallery they said they have opened in conjunction with their store. Any opinions or advise about the store and the owner. Should I get involved with them? Do they have a good rep in that area, get much traffic? Any info offered will help, thanks.

The Fret Store is owned by Darrell Williams. He is a stand-up guy and always willing to go the extra mile to benefit local artists. My experience with him and with his business has been nothing but positive. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to buy much gear from him as his store tends to offer more entry-level guitars, basses, etc. and they don't really have a competent guitar tech on staff. Have yet to hear the first person speak ill of him, though.

My band Gulley will most likely be performing in Knoxville Friday, Feb. 22 or early Saturday. The band and the gear could cram into my 4Runner, but I rather.

Does anyone have an extra drum kit available?

Not a gig, but if you happen to drop by The Fret Store in Morristown check out some of my artwork. It is music and bass related.

That's cool. Make it if you can. I hear rumors that FunkGenerator may be bringing out a newly acquired high dollar bass to be ogled and possibly caressed by this geezer! I won't reveal the maker so as not to steal Neal's thunder (pun intended)!

Sup guys, I haven't posted on Talkbass in probably a year now. Good to see there are a lot of east Tennessee bassists on here!

PS: I've been looking for a working band for ages. If you know anyone looking, let me know. I also have a drummer friend that is looking. I play literally any genre, and have gigged with anything from jazz to metal to bluegrass. Thanks.
