So I've been hearing a lot of Eberhard Weber on Pandora lately, and I'm absolutely in love with that gorgeous tone and his melodic playing style. (I'm a solo player.)

Unfortunately, I think such a beautiful tone only comes from an upright bass.

What do you guys think of Eberhard Weber?
I know nothing about him, so educate me!

I've dug his playing for a long time, The first record I remember having with him was Pat Metheny's Watercolors, and that led me to his ECM solo catalog. Very lyrical and haunting player, I also love his work with Jan Garbarek.
Some of my favorite late night listening!

While I still dig the Watercolors CD, my gosh, his intonation is awful. Sounds like me trying to play fretless

Ha, I knew somebody would bring that up. That's one of the things I dig about his playing, makes it sound more human to me. The same with some of Mick Karn's work. I've had this debate with bassist friends for almost 35 years, Eberhard might not be for everybody, but there is something in his playing that speaks to me.

The saying "the tone is in your hands" is very applicable here.

It is partly to do with strings and setup but he has a distinctive sound on both contrabass, electric CB and even cello on one album.

His EUB sounds a lot more like a fretless than an upright.
On a sidenote, he's slowly recovering from a stroke and can barely play these days.

I agree (in a way). The intonation is pretty rough though

I liked this a lot.

Somewhere around three and a half minutes in, he's got that awesome tone.

I read something about that. That's quite unfortunate.
