Just to reopen this thread, has anyone had any success in copping a reasonable facsimile of the Mindcrime bass tone using a 5-string? I'm thinking possibly a Spector Euro 5 LX through an SVT rig? I've not had a chance to try that rig out, but I seriously want to get that tone!

Also, do you reckon a lot of that tone is actually the Spector bass itself, the amp or the EMG pickups? (Not factoring Eddie Jackson's playing into the equation, at this point... )

I met Eddie Jackson In April 2004 and had a brief conversion with him about equipment. As we all know now he uses Spector/ Mike Lull's for basses. As he stated, " I love the feel of the Mike Lull's Necks and fret work". What I found interesting was that he told me he was using the Bass Pod (Rack Mount Version) direct to the house board. No bass cabinets on stage!!

He sounded great that night (April 20 at The Turning Stone Casino, Verona, NY)

Super nice guy to talk with too! He picked me out of the crowd (we were front row) and handed me the pick he used to run the opening riff in Jet City Woman!

The rest of the band was also very approachable and repeatedly thanked us for comming to their show.

Class Acts!

Hey Russ!

I run various Spector's through my Ampeg SVTIIIPro and I can get a fair approximation of that wonderful Eddie Jackson bass sound...

The Spector sound (bite and grind with solid lows) has a lot to do with it, as does playing style. If you really dig in to the notes as you play them I believe you will be very satisfied!

You're from Croydon? Cool! I'm down the road in Epsom!

I can recall that back in the Mindcrime/Empire Days he was using 18s, though that's all I remember. One of the guitar magazines was interviewing the guitar players and that comment was made about Eddie's rig.

If anyone has DirectTV, every weekend this month Queensryche is the Freeview concert for June so you might want to check it out!

I might have to come and have a listen to your Spectors and Ampeg sometime... I'll bring my Sei singlecut 5 for comparison purposes!

Been delving a little more into my CD collection... I think I've positively identified the tone I'm after (also the Eddie Jackson tone!) as the archetypal Spector tone. The growl, the thick low end and the punchy mids - classic Spector.

To that end, I'm off to Sound Control in London on Saturday to try out the Spector Euro 5 they have in stock...

So many great rock albums have been recorded using Spectors..... albums by KISS, Queensryche, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Motley Crue, Extreme, Bad English, Winger, Metallica, Steve Vai, Meat Loaf, Megadeth, Foreigner, Billy Idol, REO, Black Sabbath, Ling Colour, Scorpions, Alice Cooper, Pantera, RHCP, Alice In Chains etc etc etc....

There is a reason... the TONE! Its luffly!

Oh, and Russ.... good luck at Sound Control, but bear in mind that they often don't put new strings on their basses so it may sound a little dull...

I'll try and catch one of your gigs if I can as well!

When did Bruce Hall use Spectors? I always remember him being a Fender man. Never saw him use a Spector in the 7 times Ive seen them play? Im not sayin he didnt, I just dont remember ever seein him with one.

A lot of bassists seem to record with them, but not take them out gigging, preferring to keep the boutique bass for the studio and taking their beater basses out on tour. Maybe Bruce Hall was like this?

Around the time of 'Building The Bridge'. There are promo vids from this album in which he plays a Spector. If I remember correctly there may be a pic or two of him with his Spector in the CD booklet as well, but I can't be sure...

If I remember correctly, he was playing the burst Lulls about a year ago when I saw them open up for Dream Theater. Don't remember if he had amps on stage or not.

His tone and how he sat in the mix far surpassed Myung's sound... when the two bands came out and played together at the end for the encore it was the first time you could hear a definitive bass presence since Queensryche's set had finished.

I got a catalog from GK today and they list him as one of their artists.
