I am watching An Ox's Tale...and I never knew he was self taught on bass and played trumpet before he played bass...and that the bass solo on My Generation was one of the first if not the first to be done live!!!! IF you have not seen this vid you gotta see it Who fan or not!! I love when he says he would wear colorful three piece suits on stage to attract attention because he was the guy just standing there. This is a must see for all Bass Players Roger during a show yells turn it down..and Entwistle tells him then you play the f'ing thing and smashes his 3,500 Ambelic bass on the stage...interesting.

...interesting.
Ermm both those things are not exactly true as far as I'm aware!!

So OK he might have been self-taught on bass but he had piano lessons for many years and was classically-trained on French Horn.

There have been many interviews about how it took loads of takes to get the solo on "My Generation" as he kept breaking strings and eventually simplified it!!

His "full treble, full volume" approach to bass sound was originally supposed to be captured in the bass solo to "My Generation." According to Entwistle, his original intention was to feature the distinctive Danelectro bass, which has a very twangy sound, in the solo. However, after repeatedly breaking strings on the instrument, and after purchasing two more Danelectros in an attempt to capture the sound (Danelectro strings apparently being unavailable separately at the time), he recorded a simpler solo using a stock Fender Jazz Bass and a pick.

From http://www.thewho.net/john/Index.htm

In December 1965, The Who released the My Generation album. The revolutionary title track featured an Entwistle bass solo using a Danelectro bass which strings break easily. Replacement strings required the purchase of a new bass guitar. Entwistle bought three basses in order to finish the song.

Entwistle is a huge influence on my playing, it really sucked when he passed on, but i'll have to check out the documentary.
