Wow, its great to watch a master at work.

Questions:

1. What kind of bass is that?

2. What kind of strings is he using? Sounds like Rotosound rounds to me.

3. In "Baba O' Reilly", is he using 3 fingers in his right hand on some of those runs? Sounds like it...

4. In "Won't Get Fooled Again," is he doing some slapping and popping around 4:00 and some other places? I just hadn't associated that technique with him.

5. Also on "Baba," is using some "reverse plucking?" IOW, attacking the string from between body and string, plucking outward with his fingernail? Like a double hit, pluck in, pluck out?

I can't remember what it's exactly called but I know it's an Alembic and the reissue is called the "Spyder". I'm not sure if his is identical though, someone else will know.
And on strings, he uses Rotosound rounds I think, again I don't know all of the details.

1) some kind of alembic custom explorer
2) yes, he designed the rotosounds
3-5) i wouldn't be surprised

1) It's a top of the line Alembic Series II model, in the custom Exploiter shape body. Alembic made a limited reissue of this bass a while back called the Spyder, different electronics so much less expensive (I hesitate to use the word 'cheaper'!). Can't believe this but I only just discovered the UK Alembic dealer is 30 mins away from where I live, and they have a Spyder!

2) Strings would have been Rotosound 45-105. Roundwound of course.

3)Probably!

4)He does a fair bit of popping, particularly on the open G in the main riff. He never really thumb slapped much, but his fingerstyle technique often gave similar results when he played nearer the neck.

5)Sounds like something he'd do. Outside of 'Live at Leeds', John's Alembic period was undoubtedly his most rich and fruitful, tonally.
If you're a fan of this sound, check out the 'McVicar' OST. LOTS of growly Alembic courtesy of JE, nice and high in the mix too.
