Did a search but there is not much specific about Eric Avery's gear on the Nothing's shocking album...sounds like a pick and maybe a jazz? I dunno..love the tone though...esp on "ocean size"..

Anyone know the gear he used/uses?

Eric Avery's tone

I have long been a fan of his tone with Janes, especially Nothing's Shocking. I know it was played on a mid 80's stock american Precision with a pick. I also know he used an Ampeg svt 2 non pro with Janes, whether he had that amp for that record I don't know. I also read an article where he said he boosted the lowest lows and the highest highs on the eq sliders of that amp with the mids either flat or slightly scooped. I had the preamp of that amp (SVT-IIP) Preamp and the low mids are pretty strong even flat which I think is an important part of that tone (250hz).

Looks like he is currently using p basses with fender amps and cabs...based on 9/09 Bass Player mag....moved from jazz bass for his solo stuff back to p bass...cool..
scoops the mids slightly and added a bunch of pedals including one of my faves... MXR octaver

I saw Jane's a few times, once at a bar called Scream, another time opening for Love and Rockets at the Wiltern, I seem to remember seeing two of those Trace Elliot cabinets, the ones where there was an 18" and a 10" speaker, playing that black P-bass with stickers. Eric definitely rates, in my opinion, as one of the greatest rock bass players.

Awesome player, and one of my biggest inspirations. Absolutely love his stuff with Jane's (although my favourite playing of his is on Deconstruction - the album that him and Dave Navarro did after Jane's split up the first time).

Yep, as has been said before, his tone is all P-Bass (mostly with a pick - he did occasionally slap too, notably on "No One's Leaving") into an SVT-2. Simple and very effective. When I saw Jane's recently, he alternated between a black Jazz with a gold pickguard and his old trusty
"Brahms" Precision (a stock black '87 American P-Bass with rosewood fingerboard).

He was brought up in the flats in rock thread before. Sounds to me like he plays rounds though?

Pretty sure they're rounds judging by the sound of it, I don't think they're flats

Do you think that Three Days were recorded with rounds?

Yep. The "Brahms" Precision, with rounds. Plenty of bite and pick noise there, certainly not a characteristic P-with-flats sound.

Thanks! I love who he gets this pick noise, without being hars or brittle.

Good to see the love for Eric Avery. Saw them a few times first time round, then again supporting NIN in an arena. White P bass and a Trace stack. Definitely rounds.

Killer player...and to disagree with many if the above, I think Ritual beats Shocking hands down every time. One of my all time favourite LP's.
