Eric Bass of Shinedown

I saw these guys for the second time last night. DAMN!! What a player! For the style of music, he played great. No under-playing, and no over-playing. His tone was downright awesome. His new Dean signature basses looked really sweet too. I highly recommend going and seeing Shinedown if they are coming near you. They put on a great show and have tons of talent. These guys will be legends one day IMHO.

Shinedown is already in my book for good bands to watch out for ever since "Second Chance" came out and topped iTunes. And the rhythm section knows what it's doing and how to do it well.

I'm glad they made it through the lineup changes after "Us and Them" and "Sound of Madness" is an excellent record, with Chris Chaney doing the work on the album and Bass doing a great job of interpreting them live.

I'll have to check out his Dean sig. He'd been playing Sterlings as long as he's been in the band. Boogie amps too, IIRC.

the problem i have with shinedown these days is that all of the original members, short of the singer and drummer, have left or been fired.

jasin todd wrote all the material. the last album was made almost entirely by studio musicians.. and its a pop success. they arent a rock band anymore. they are a really edgy pop band.

im sure their new hired guns are great, but it isnt, and wont be the same.

I think they sound better than ever. Their debut was a total overproduction and it sounded very anemic and empty when they played the songs live (like on the live DVD) and the writing on Us and Them was meh at best, IMO. I'll be interested to see how their next album sounds with the new bandmates doing the work and writing in the studio, much like Chris Daughtry did with his actual band, and you saw the improvement Leave This Town had. I think Us and Them was a lot more poppy than their current offering. Devour and Sound of Madness are pretty rocking I think.

If you're gonna trash them, have your facts strait.

Brent (the singer) and Dave Basset (a producer) wrote 98% of the music for Sound of Madness. Studio musicians recorded the parts, sure. But didn't write them. Brent has always been the main writer for Shinedown.

Song where others contributed are "Breaking Inside", which Brent wrote with Bobby Huff, and "Call Me" written by Brent and Tony Battaglia. There is an extra track for the fan club package called "Son of Sam" which was written by Brent and Dave Beato.

Zach (the guitarist) has been with the band since '05. Playing bass, rhythm guitar, and now lead guitar.

Eric (the bassist) was one of the producers Brent went to write with for the album.

People that "left" or were "fired", were due to rather extreme personal issues and heavy drug use.

These are my friends, please don't go around spreading lies.

Not to mention, if you ever met any of these guys face to face, you'd find they are some of the nicest, most down to earth and HUMBLE people you've ever met. That aside from being really great musicians.

Good info and that lines up pretty much with everything I'd heard and/or read about the situation. I think Zach's a better player than Jasin was/is anyway, but that's just me. And yeah I'm pretty sure if you check the credits Brent has been the driving writing force.

I know them personally from touring with them. I continue to talk to them on a regular basis and go hang out with them whenever they come near the area.

Yeah, like I said, Brent is the main writer in Shinedown. Always has been and will be. Sure, he co-writes with producers.....newsflash, Pretty much everyone does at that stage in the game.

Nice.

I'm surprised we don't get more people "in the biz" on this forum. The comments from a lot of the users are usually on par with most tards that think bickering on YouTube makes them "legit"...

Yeah, people forget about the fact that it is a business, shinedown seems really ahead of the game in that aspect since they are seemingly in control of the business aspect of their group. I love their music too and I think that fact just says they'll have some staying power IMO.

I remember arguing with a LOT of people after their debut that they'd be a one and done, and like I said I think their current lineup is the best they've had and hope they keep writing great stuff.

They've been touring on TSOM for the 3rd year now. Last time I talked to Zach, they have plans to go through till Christmas, and then they'll be taking a much deserved break before doing the next album. I think he said the longest break they've had on this album cycle was like 3 weeks. That's insane.

So they wrote some really good songs, and god forbid people like them. Now because of that, they're not "Rock"??!! They're an "Edgy Pop Band"!?!?....Gimme a friggen break.

Wow has it really been out that long? RSB feels old...

I don't hear much "pop" on that album... "If You Only Knew" possibly, but hell that's just a damn good tune!

Success always brings out the haters. Personally I just wanna hit those types, you know the ones who completely abandon perfectly good music once it becomes too "popular". Whats the friggin difference from when a band was in their garage to when they're selling out statiums?

Their new album is being completely mixed by Eric Bass, so I'm expecting a good heavy bass album next.

It doesn't matter if they have studio musicians or not IMO. See them live, and you will know they are a true talented rock band. These guys know what they are doing.

Yeah, "Devour" Was released in May of '08, the album came out in June. But they had been touring for a few months before "Devour" was released.

3 years and 5 singles on 1 album is almost completely unheard of these days. Not to mention, ALL 11 of their singles have reached top 5 on the Hot Rock Mainstream Tracks charts. Something NO other band has done.

I'll have to check out his Dean sig. He'd been playing Sterlings as long as he's been in the band. Boogie amps too, IIRC.
When I saw them a month ago, He played his new Dean Sig exclusively, and all his amps for Hartke Hydrive's
