I'd like you people to fill in the 'Essential Jazz Collection' list, and the bassist that made it so. I am new to jazz and would like good recommendations.

Why? IIRC, that is more of an orchestral side of Mingus...staying on that path, why not "The Black Saint & The Sinner Lady"?
Chuck Rainey played bass on Steely Dan's Aja excepting "Deacon Blues" (by Becker).

The song 'Take Five' By Dave Brubeck is absolutely essential.
Can't remember the bassist, little help? |

Actually the bass line on that is pretty dull and not really essential listening - if you want to hear odd-meter Jazz - then anything by Dave Holland is a much better bet - especially his own quintet and compositions!

Dave Holland's groups are playing some of the best Jazz around today!
