Extreme Metal Fretless

Sign in to disble this ad
Okay, sorry if I repeated a previous thread. I really did search.

Anyway, I've been jamming a lot of Borknagar lately and noticed that all (or almost all) of their bassists tend to play fretless. Tyr especially comes to mind. Kai was awesome too.

I love Steve DiGiorgio and Sean Malone, but I want to hear MORE fretless mastery in extreme metal. I realize that mostly prog bands will be mentioned (if any), but that's okay with me since I consider Borknagar and Death rather progressive.

Any listening suggestions?

I'm sure there's been a thread on this before, but here is the ultimate fretless death metal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mesr2siegRg

+1 for Obscura. Also, Martin Mendez uses a fretless in much of Opeth's music.

Wow. Someone named their band after the infamous (awesome) Gorguts album that is impossible to play.... skepticism sets in....

Holy crap!

Someone commented that the rhythm section was in Necrophagist. Very impressive! You can tell by the style!

Really? I saw them live about 6 years ago, but I didn't play bass back then, so I payed attention to Mikael...

On Lamentations it looks like he's playing a fretted Jazz, but I could be wrong....

He uses both. There's that smooth fretless slide in the beginning to "Harlequin Forest", I think he might have used one on "Ending Credits" and "Face of Melinda". There are probably more.

Intronaut. Not extreme, but still very progressive. It's hard to describe them really, kinda post/prog/stoner metal hybrid. Great stuff though! Also Nick Schendzielos (I have no idea how to pronounce that) from Cephalic Carnage plays a 6 string fretless. Cephalic is great if you want some weird grindcore, which I always do.

I believe that Jawsh, the old bassist, played fretless at times as well.
