Fabio Pignatelli (Goblin)

Now here's an underappreciated bassist!

A major influence on me stylistically, Fabio produced some of the most powerful and atmospheric basslines I've ever heard. Most of his career has been spent with prog-rock outift Goblin, who specialised in soundtracks for horror flicks in the '70s and '80s. If you haven't heard any of their stuff, do yourself a favour...

Pignatelli was one funky dude and he could weave some pretty frenetic solos into his riffs in a way which added to the song, yet never restricted the groove. Great, inspirational stuff for beginners and veterans alike. Check it out one time...

Goblin! Best band I've ever heard. Suspiria is one of greatest influences as an aspiring film music composer along with Barry Adamson's fake film scores.

Dude, check out Roller - it's a non-soundtrack album and it is truly Goblin at their finest. Funky and scary all at once...

I second the suggestion for Roller (killer bassline on the title track), and also suggest that you look into the pre-Goblin band Cherry Five.

I believe that the only LP they cut was produced by Eddie Offord (Yes), and I'd hate to call the band a Yes-Clone, because it's a pretty cool album that sounds much like Yes would continuing in the vein of "Time and a Word" through to "Fragile".

Fabio's obviously playing a Rick on this one...all other pics of him that I've seen had him with a P-Bass.
