Trujillo flat-out embarrassed Hetfield and Hammett in a making-of "Magnetic" video. Flamenco-style acoustic jam; Hetfield lifted the main riff and dumbed it down for one of the songs on the album. Duff McKagen plays rhythm guitar in his side band, and is probably a better guitar player than bassist lol !

Tommy Cogbill- lots of session stuff on both bass and guitar (he's the bassist on Dusty Springfield's "Son Of A Preacher Man", Wilson Picket's "Funky Broadway", and Aretha's "Natural Woman". He played guitar on Aretha's "Think" when the producers asked Jerry Jemmott to try bass on it.

Off the top of my head, Paul McCartney played guitar with the Beatles( Stu Sutcliffe was the original bass player). Tom petty played bass for Mudcrutch, before switching to guitar.Ron Wood played bass for Jeff Beck, prior to playing with the Rolling Stones. I played guitar for 20+ years, started playing bass 4 or so years ago.

Willie Nelson started as a bassist..... so did Waylon Jennings

Both toured with notable performers (Buddy Holly etc)

You can hear it on their famous recordings (bass influence)

Chris Wolstenholme from Muse
Lemmy might as well have played another guitar

I'm pretty sure 90% of bass players out there own a guitar but prefer playing bass anyway.

Gene Simmons used to play what they called a 'scratch' guitar during Kiss' early years, He'd lay down a basic guitar track that Peter would work out his drums to. Don't know if he played any guitar on actual released recordings or not...maybe on his solo album?

Yeah, it's a natural learning progression to play guitar as well, but we all know that the real power lies in the groove
