Carole Kaye is a great pick bassist and the most famous studio bass player from the 60's and early 70's, but to my ear you can't beat the sound of Joe Osborne. Some of it had to do with the large pick he used with the 1960 Fender "stack-knob" Jazz Bass. Somehow this resulted in a distinct but smooth attack and a natural, full range tone. His bass lines were usually interesting and he wrote or personalized many of them even though he was a studio musician and often worked from charts.

Isn't it best to be great at both? IMO fingers and picks both serve a purpose.

JPJ played with a pick SOMETIMES, just like Entwistle. Are you asking more about exclusive pick players? Mike gordon, Phil Lesh.

Randy Jo Hobbs

First name that popped into my head.

Played with Johnny and Edgar Winter, McCoy's.

And, speaking of Johnny Winter, he once played a mean pick bass. Check out what happens at about 3:25, ya gotta love it!

The guy playing guitar/vocals is Jon Paris from Milwaukee, Johnny's bassist at the time. Also a pick player.

Here's one of Paris on bass. No slack! IMO.

Maybe because so many bands can somewhat be classified loosely as prog rock.

I believe it's more 50/50. Below just a short list to make my point (and yes, I forgot some bands, and others can loosely be classified as prock):

Fingers:

Geddy Lee (Rush)
Jim Crichton (Saga)
John Deacon (Queen)
Tony Levin (King Crimson, Yes, ....!!!)
Pete Trewavas (Marillion)
...

Picks:

Roger Waters (Pink FLoyd)
Roger Glover (Deep Purple)
Chuck Panozzo (Styx)
Dougie Thomson (Supertramp)
Billy Greer (Kansas)

...
you left squire off that list. also greg lake (ELP), john wetton (king crimson/ASIA), jeffrey hammond/john glascock (Jethro Tull), mike rutherford (Genesis), and ray shulman (Gentle Giant), all played with a pick.

Just went back through this thread and...have one slight addendum here;

Pete T is mostly pick (90% pick range) on the Transatlantic stuff.

Tony breaks out the pick from time to time w/ Peter.

I read an interview with Stanley clarke in Guitar Player mag back in the early 80's where he sited Chris Squire and Anthony Jackson as his favorite pick players.
