BEFORE THIS GETS FLAMEY:
By "emo", I'm not referring to people who use the term to describe what is otherwise known as "pop-punk". I'm using it to describe bands influenced by Fugazi and indie rock who recorded melodic, emotional music.
A great example of the bass playing I'm talking about would be Nate Mendel of Sunny Day Real Estate. Have you ever listened to the lines he lays down in Diary? Great stuff with a genuine groove. Not hyper-technical, but you can tell he knows his instrument. Another great example would be Rick Burch of Jimmy Eat World, who, according to this article and unbeknownst to me, uses drop-C# . I'm not exactly sure why he does, probably a mixture of comfort and personal experience (he does come from the hardcore punk scene).
Anyway, who else considers themselves a fan of emo bass?

Truthfully, I prefer Cap'n Jazz to The Promise Ring, but Davey von Bohlen is one hell of a vocalist. The bassist, Scott Beschta, was in Ceilishrine, I believe. I think he also did lead vocals for them.

Check out that T-bird bass tone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HdQ8dr5rKQ

And, uh, thanks? Quote:

Also, if you've listened to 'Tomorrow Come Today' by Boysetsfire - the bass tone is rockin'!! |

Not the loose, jammy lines he riffed out with SDRE. It's a shame because the SDRE basslines are so great, you can hear the influence of players like Joe Lally and Paul Simonon from time to time.
Plus, along with a noticeable decline in chops, he became an AIDS denialist. Coincidence ?
Going back to Lally, check out his line and tone from "Bed For The Scraping" off of Red Medicine. His tone and line on the track "Repeater" through "Brendan #1" off of the album of the same name as the former is also great.

It's made up of one of the kids from Busted (a crappy Simple Plan-esque band) who realized he would rather make decent music and some of his friends. The music generally leans more toward the post-hardcore stylings of Glassjaw, but it's good stuff with some really nifty bass lines.
That's right, nifty. I'm bringin' it back.
