Looking to inspire a few of my students who are bringing in acoustic bass guitars. Other than Brian Ritchie from the Violent Femmes, who am I forgetting about? Thanks. |

Jonas Hellborg has recorded a fair bit of ABG, IIRC.

Jonas Hellborg.
Hands down.
I never seen anyone do what he can do with a ABG.
Slap, Cord, Speed, Melody.
Great stuff. |

Although I much prefer him on electric, he's amazing on ABG. But I would say that, I love him to bits. Amazing player. |

BRIAN RITCHIE, anyone?
Sure, pick player. Melody? Rythym? Sololing? Chunky double stops? Counterpoint? Backing vocals?
Yup. Maybe not a virtuoso of Hellborg's level, but man, that first Femmes record....perfect on so many levels, bassbeing one of them. |

| | | | Skulli Sverrisson Skulli Sverrisson is the first one I've heard in decades who is doing something really new with the acoustic bass guitar. He is absolutely amazing and he is not just playing it like an electric bass guitar. |

| | | | Hi Brian,
Nice to hear from you, I have been a fan of that first Femmes album for many years. It's one of the albums that got me thinking more creatively about my bass playing. The recent article in BP was nice too.
I heard Skuli on Allan Holdsworth's Hard Hat Area and was impressed, but haven't followed him since. Can you recommend something?

| | | | I don't know much about Skulli, except that he plays in Pachora and sometimes plays with Laurie Anderson.
He is Icelandic and I believe splits his time between Iceland and Brooklyn. I met him in Iceland when he played in a band that backed me up on a jazz gig (I was playing shakuhachi). When I showed up to the rehearsal, he had an ABG (5 string Tacoma with high C and nylon strings). I said, "Hey I play acoustic bass guitar too." He answered in a deadpan Icelandic monotone, "I know, many of my generation have been influenced by you." Which cracked me up because he looks older than me.
I think he is known mainly for his electric work, but he has a lovely duet album with saxophonist Oskar Godjonnson called something like "Efter Pogin" but I can't write the real title because it's Icelandic and they use a different alphabet. Good luck finding that.
He plays it aggressively sometimes and other times uses classical guitar technique to build lush arpeggios and chords. If I recall properly he uses pick and fingers simultaneously. He is amazing. In my opinion he's the first to do something original with ABG since.......well, you know. Most people play it like the bastard son of the P Bass.
I lurk on Talkbass and use the search engine to find out things like "best wah wah for bass" or "what's better Dimarzio or Seymour Duncan?". It's a great resource. But here I thought I could shine a bit of spotlight on a superb and underrated bassist. |
