Favorite Jazz Bassist?

Sign in to disble this ad
Who are your favorite jazz electric bassists, and what are your favorite albums that are either there's or that they played on?

I like Jaco Pastorius a lot, like most. I love his lines on Pat Metheny's Bright Size Life. Especially on the first track, he's so melodic and works so well with Pat. I also love his work on Word of Mouth. Blackbird makes me go to a different state of mind every time I hear it. It's also ironic, because I was a a jazz festival yesterday and the guest artist played Blackbird in 7/4 time, it was nuts.

I'm also a fan of Adam Nitti. He's such a great musician and from what I'm aware, he pulls his influences from jazz and progressive rock, both great genres. I love how much groove there is on redemption street, and I'd really love to know who that saxophonist was. I also like Not Forsaken and the harmonies he uses, I'm a huge harmony freak.

The reason I ask this is because I'm looking for some more electric players to listen to, most of the jazz I have uses upright bass. It's great, but I'm an electric player and need to listen to some of my "own kind" if you will.

For the most part, I do not like Jazz. However, I respect the ability of jazz musicians. I love Marcus Miller's tone and saw him perform in Boston several years ago. I also like Scott Ambush and Larry Antonino.

I'm the same way with rock, except the opposite, ha ha. I respect the talent of many rock musicians. I like the softer side of rock that still has a lot of jazz influence in it, The Beatles, for example. But things like hard rock, alternative rock, etc. I don't really like, but respect none-the-less.

Although he plays mainly double bass, Avishai Cohen is a great jazz bassist on the EB as well and a great composer.

I think Scott LaFaro who played with the Bill Evans Trio was an amazing bassist. He too played a double bass and died way before his time.

Chris Wood is my favorite. He's incredible on both upright and electric, but I prefer to hear him play electric.

I don't have a lot of albums to recommend; most of my favorite electric jazz bassists I know from live performances:

Jeff Andrews
Steve Swallow
Laurence Cottle
Jeff Berlin
Anthony Jackson (can he be called a "jazz" player?)

...and I've recently started getting into Mike Pope (a TB regular!)

Stanley Clarke, Jaco, Victor Wooten & Marcus Miller of course, another bassist who is just amazing is Robertino Pagliari of the band Ohm with Chris Poland.

The only electric "jazz player" I can think of at the moment is Steve Swallow.
Since he is one of my favorite player, I'll mention him.

Steve Swallow - Carla
Jimmy Haslip - Twenty Five
Mark Egan - Live...In the Moment

Those are my favorites but there are many more that are more than worth a listen.
