I've listened to Metallica since Kill 'em All so to me Cliff's the man I also remember Rob when he was with Suicidal and Infectious. Incredible bass playing with both bands but his style is a lot different than Metallicas'. Seen Jason play live and he's as solid as they come that being said I would say
1 Cliff
2 Rob
3 Jason

I've always thought Rob was an amazing bassist, from his work with No Mercy (ST offshoot) and Suicidal Tendencies (I've never listened to Infectious Grooves).
You're missing out, you should check out some Infectious Grooves, they're killer!

check 'em out, just ignore the cheesy vid and listen

Cliff Burton, by a landslide, there is just no comparison. He was a large part of what made Metallica "Metallica". Is style and sound were and are iconic to many bass players

Jason in second. He was an excellent bassist, and I don't think he was ever given enough of a chance. Listen to his lines on "The God That Failed", "My Friend of Misery", and "King Nothing". Just excellent solid bass lines. Also, on Youtube, there are versions of Justice album songs with the bass in them

Ron McGovney was good for the demos, but just didn't have the lasting power

As for Rob, I'm not really a fan. He's just too much of an ape for Metallica

Don't get me started on Bob Rock...

Easily Cliff; Jason was good but Rob just annoys me.

I didn't know Metallica had a bassist.

This question is somewhat interesting...My favorite bassist was Cliff, just because he was such an iconoclast and there is such an aura about him and 'what could have been.'

But, I saw Jason live five or six times, and he was Metallica, to me. I really wish he wasn't crapped on so much by the other guys, and I'm happy for him that he got out with his head high.

I think that Rob is quite a bit more talented than both. His work with IG, ST, Ozzy and Metallica are a real breath of fresh air and I'm really glad that a fingerstyle-playing, creative, funky, and intense bassist is in the most influential metal band. My hope is that he ups the talent in the talent pool and bassists get better because of his influence.

Cliff was great, but in 3 years back in the early '80's. That's just not enough. Rob has already been in the band longer than Cliff...probably played more shows, and has played in front of many more people. I'm glad Rob got the gig. Good guy, better player, and thankful for his opportunity.
