favorite recordings with 8-string bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm always on the lookout for some more 8-string bass players to add to my CD collection, just wondering if anyone has some favorites?

My absolute favorite is probably "Ina's Song" by Limbo Race. This appeared on a single (remember those? 45 rpm vinyl disc thingie) released on some indie label in the early 1980's. I used to see Limbo Race perform around Boston a lot, and I mixed FOH for them at the InSquare Men's Bar a few times. But anyway, "Ina's Song" has such a huge driving 8-string bass part that there's no guitar at all on the song...unusual for a band fronted by a guitarist. John Niedlhart was the bassist, playing an Ibanez ST-980, and I found an online version of the tune here:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...ndid=110487593

Of artists with a more visible commercial profile, I'd have to cite Bill Laswell's 8-string playing (also an ST-980) on the title cut from Material's Memory Serves album (Okay, that's not really very commercial either...) or John Entwistle's Alembic 8-string on "Trick Of The Light".

What do you recommend?

King's X. Doug Pinnick uses a Hamer 8-string on most if not all of their recordings. Killer tone, very unique.

Not a big Zeppelin fan and I don't think Presence is that solid an album, but I love Achilles' Last Stand. Jones is a pretty great musician.

Mark Egan's Mosaic. Lots of 8 string on that record. He used a double neck 8 string fretted / 4 string fretless on most of the tracks. A lot of Cheap Trick's records supposedly has it but I could never tell just by listening.

Sorry to correct you, but Doug uses Hamer and Yamaha 12 string basses. Also, the majority of King's X recording are regular 4 string detuned.

I'm not exactly sure what songs he used it on but Geezer Butler used one. I just watched a vid on YT a few weeks ago, sorry I don't remember the song name at the moment.

The majority of the first couple of galactic cowboy records were NOTHING but 8 string mixed in stereo with some major distortion added for fun...

Me and my drummer love 'Success Story' by The Who.

Led Zep's 'Nobody's Fault But Mine' is great because you can pan the stereo and just hear Bonzo and JPJ on 8-string.

Stone Temple Pilots - Press Play

P-Funk - I got a Thing and Free Your Mind (Billy Nelson, per 7/05 Bass Player article)

John Paul Jones' two solo albums, Zooma and The Thunderthief, are just packed with 8- string stuff.

This Mortal Coil "Kangaroo". Played by the great Simon Raymonde.

Gonna Raise Hell by Cheap Trick. Tho' Tom Petersson is known for his 12-string, this song was recorded with an Alembic 8-string.

actually, now that I've had a listen through it again, a lot of that Material record sounds like 8-string.

There's also a video clip of Laswell using it with Praxis in 2003 or so.
