Slap is overrated.

I'm more into Claypool than Flea, but Mike Gordon can school them all!

MARCUS MILLER IS THE MASTER!

Marcus Miller rules! There are many acrobats on the bass who even play faster than him, but nobody hits that deep profound pulsing groovy slapping like Marcus Miller does! His sound, his timing, his frasing, his groove... , it is just state of the art performance without compromising the character of the bass guitar as a rhythmical/harmonical instrument it is. No bull**** guitar imitiation Wooten kind of playing when he slaps his ´77 Jazz Bass. Just pure bass, good to die for.

Why imitate ?? Victa and his bud A. Wellington might just blow Flea and Claypool away.

Or were you specifically referring to rock-based slapping.

Larry Graham is the one and only slap player for me. What's happened to slap bass after him is just the purest of crap.

Let me now hide myself behind this rock wall before the rotten tomatoes start to fly.

Out of the two, Les, even though I don't really dig him all that much.

The best slap players imo?

Stuart Hamm, Mark King and Jonas Hellborg.

claypool is far more complicated in technique than flea is, that is for sure. But who is "best"? That is in the ear of the beholder.

Jonas Hellborg and Mark King, anyone who says that Mr King is old hat, or over the hill should listen to some of the live stuff he's done over the last 2 or 3 years, 'Mr Pink' on the live at Reading CD is fantastic.

Jonas doesn't slap anywhere near as much as he should, listening to stuff like the Jonas Hellborg Group and "it's the pits, slight return" from the Elegant Punk album make me wish he would do more!

And as for the Mark King comment, that sounds suspiciously like my Bassworld signature, and my threat to those who called Mark King "old hat"

Gonna give this one to Louis Johnson or Larry Graham. Les and Flea are great but not close to these guys. I'm gonna have to throw Mark King, Mark Adams and Nate Phillips in for good measure.

I'm a big fan of both. Both guys are highly skilled and very accomplished rock bass players who slap. It's a matter of personal preference. It's like asking: What's the coolest muscle car ever? Some people might say Mustang or Shelby Cobra or something (Ford guys) while other people might say Camero or Chevelle or Corvette (Chevy guys) it's just a matter of personal taste, or as they say over on the Primus message board, "IJAMOO" (it's just a matter of opinion)

Marcus Miller I would say is obviously (no matter how many people might argue otherwise) the most solid slapper out there. There's Victor as well, but I think he's taken slap somewhere else.

I would however, also agree that's it's just personal opinion at the end of the day. I like Richard Bona and Oteil Burbridge's stuff as well as maybe some of Helborg's stuff as well, and I really like Mark King's playing, though it's sometimes kind of thin sounding just because of those thin strings he uses in combination with the graphite necks as well.

Excellent player and vicious technique.

'Who is best?' is un-answerable, due to the extreme subjectivity of each response. I have my favorites, but I guess you know that now.

If this is a slap match between les and flee, then les has it. Otherwise, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten have to have the title of slap master

Nah - I like Claypool's chops the best, I can see where Wooten has a lot of technical ability and he's pretty musical, but Les is more musical to my ears and more my style. IJAMOO
