Favourite DYLAN bassist?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just watched the last waltz again for the first time in years and had forgotten how good Rick Danko was. Seen Dylan a lot in the last ten years or so and love Tony Garniers work.

Just wondering...how many bassists has he worked with? Who is your favourite?

Big fan of Rick Danko here. Also the bassist from the Paul Butterfield band on his first electric performance plays some tasty sh**. Always loved Harvey Brooks on Highway 61 Revisited. Interesting to learn that John Sebastian recorded some of the bass tracks on Bringing It All Back Home. Never would have guessed that. Also I think Charlie McCoy on John Wesley Harding recorded some of the best bass lines on any Dylan album.

As you, I love Tony Garnier's work. As you can see, I love many of Dylan's bassists :P But on the last few albums the bass work has been very good.

Danko is in a class by himself, but Harvey Brooks was a big influence for me as well... and he's still going!

Was it Jerome Arnold who sat in with Mike Butterfield?

You mean Paul Butterfield? or Mike Bloomfield? Yeah I think it was Jerome Arnold. Previously of Howlin Wolf's band.

Dylan has had some killer bassists.

Rob Stoner, had my favorite tone.

Larry Klein who played on the album Down In The Groove, Don Was who played on and produced Under The Red Sky, and Nathan East who played live with Dylan as a quest for Eric Clapton

Of course. Forgot all about Rob Stoner. Love all that rolling thunder era vibe.

However, Dankos work on Blonde on Blonde for me is the epitome of how bass can support the wonder of Dylans lyrical wordsmithery. Visions of Johanna gives me chills every time I hear it.

His sounds on Isis are some of my favorite ever on record, no doubt.

I agree. Danko. If you don't know the song "Danko/Manuel" by Jason Isbell (when he was with the Drive by Truckers) you should.

Having some inner turmoil here trying to choose between Danko and Stoner! Never saw either live with the man, so Garnier wins on that front, but I really couldn't pick from blonde on blonde vs desire.

I suppose if anything it shows how magical Dylans songwriting was to be able to give both bassists the capacity to shine without outshining each other....if that makes sense?!

drawing a blank on the name- and I know there's some confusion between the NY and Minnesota sessions on this album, but I love the bass work on Blood On the Tracks. Very understated.

Harvey Brooks - ya gotta love someone who played on both Highway 61 and Miles' Bitches Brew. I also like Danko.

True, Danko's all around plying is king.
Got to give a nod to Harvey Brooks too.
