Lots of these about. Thought i'd make a new one
Favourite: Steve Harris, so influencial, helped me alot getting into music, writes amazing lyrics and of course is great at bass
Least Fave: Jaco...no offense, but watching a video for "Portrait of tracy" its just random notes, doesn't even seem to have a tune.

| | | | Wait.
So, out of all the thousands of popular bassists who've come and gone your least favorite is Jaco Pastorius?
That makes all kinds of sense. |

For instance, you probably wouldn't like Bill Dickens, Marcus Miller, or John Pattitucci either. Nothing wrong with that, but I would suggest trying to incorporate jazz into your listening repertoire, there is something to be learned from it (For instance, Between the Buried and Me and Animals as Leaders both incorporate elements of jazz into their music from time to time). |

I am always happy when someone mentions Scott Ambush! RIGHT ON!
I don't like the style of bass Flea has been playing before, but from what I have been reading, this cat is opening his horizons by taking serious jazz and classical lessons.
As to the rest of your dislikes, I am totally in agreement! I would say I would put any of these guys that play with their bass hanging low as not my favorites. Can't say I "hate" any of them.....well, maybe...there is one bassist I really dislike. Someone who always will be overated to the max.....the dude from Phish, Mike Gordon. I have never understood what anyone sees in him. Ok, he is an alright bassist, but people look up to him with that type of fervor really only seen at star trek conventions. He is just not THAT good!
I admit also, I am not a huge Jaco fan. I think the work he did on the 3-4 weather report albums he played was sheer genius. And that was the Jaco I was first attracted to. But all his solo albums left me cold, and many of the projects he did with others also bothered me. At one time, I actually enjoyed his bridge pickup nasal tone...now, it's probably my least favorite.
My favorite bass players at this point (for electric) are almost all the smooth jazzers. Haslip, Ambush, Kim Stone, Nathan East...plus those session players like Chuck Rainey and Leland Sklar and of course, the mighty Pino Palladino.
Funk music had some of the best, my favorites being Mark Adams, Washington and Buddy Henkerson (all associated with the band slave or Aurra)...then again, Bernard Edwards! Wow!
In England, there are so many (some of my choices might make you laugh a bit), but here goes: Mark King, Nick Beggs, John Taylor, and the other brother from Spandau Ballet.
For prog, it will always be Chris Squire, John Wetton and Geddy lee. Hands down.
I find myself not liking any of the modern punk bassists at all. But in the old days, it would have been the guy from the pretenders, the bassist from Elvis Costello's band, and the guy from REM. I actually liked those guys a lot.
As far as metal, there is only one: Cliff Williams from AC/DC. That defined metal bass playing for me. The guy from Metallica never did it for me. I don't understand the adoration either. "anasthesia/pulling teeth"....it's almost venerated but it leaves me cold. |

Favorite bassists: Cliff Burton, Steve DiGiorgio, Jeroen Paul Thesseling, and Alex Webster. I admire a ton of bassists but these are the guys I pull the most inspiration from.

Cant really think of any of my least favourites. Its hard to enjoy a band that doesn't have good bass playing. I suppose I dont particularly like the new Deftones bassist.. although his style isn't much different from Chi's. |
