Felix Pastorious - If you have not heard this guy play before - you need to check him out! I saw him play with The Jeff Coffin Band (Jazz fusion) at a Clinic at Cascio Interstate Music (New Berlin , WI) this afternoon. My jaw is still on the floor. This guy is incredible - The best bassist that I have ever seen in person - Sorry Geddy (<- I still love ya man!). I think his Fedora actually caught fire! What a monster player!! I am definitely picking up some of their stuff in the near future.

From what I read he has developed his own style but can play all of his Father's material and has done tribute shows.
I believe that Jeff Coffin keeps good company and tours with Dave Matthews and Bella Fleck.
I would love to see him with Felix but I looked on his schedule and they are not coming to the east coast in the near future.

| | | i used to see Felix and his brother Julius who plays killer drums (very tony williams and elvin jones influnced but a style thats all him) back at alligator alley with way of the groove those two cats are amazing, im such a long time fan, he used to use a 5 string bottom wave jazz bass and he used to kill on it, the both of them together make one of the best rythem sections i have ever seen, honestly on level with stanley clarke and lenny white when i saw the rtf reunion, cant say enough of how awsome he is, he toured with cindy blackman for her "new lifetime" band a couple of months ago and was also a member of the jam band "the heavy pets" briefly, great guy, great player
some videos for you guys of him playing what ive heard was the jaco relic robert trajhilo (spelling?) used to own before buying the real thing that he gave felix to borrow: YouTube - Jaco Birthday 2009 - Havona (pt 1 of 2) YouTube - Jaco Birthday 2009 - Havona (pt 2 of 2)
p.s the guitarist in the video adam was also in way of the groove and is originally a bass player, and an awsome one at that

Somebody asked me that at the music store when Jeff Coffin introduced him. I figured that if he wasn't Jaco's son that he had to be related in some way. What an absolutely incredible player!! Darn near makes me wanna just give up because I'll never even be close to as good as he is.

I've got recordings of us jamming in Adam's living room when I was like 14! I'm on bass and Felix is playing keys haha....but Julius is a fantastic drummer and Adam is a long time friend of mine who really taught me everything I needed to know to be a great bass player and introduced me to all those guys and the whole way of the groove thing....we went to Middle and High school together playing upright in the high school orchestra and switching between guitar and bass in the school's jazz/fusion band. Felix is no Jaco, but he's a DOPE bass player doing his own thing and I'm always happy to see another south Florida bassist make it, even if their last name is Pastorius haha....how do you know Adam? maybe we know each other? |

Sorry, but didn't hear much in Coffin's playing; but not real familiar with him. | Granted my eyes and ears were mainly glued to Felix , but Jeff Coffins Sax playing was also truly amazing. The whole band was simply smoking. The crowd (young and old) were really into it and by their expressions - Amazed like I was.

I only went out to the Alley a couple of times, but jammed with them whenever I could. I saw Adam in several classes everyday in high school haha....we were stand partners in orchestra and he was my unofficial electric bass teacher for about 2 years. Good guy and NASTY musician....he plays in a rock band now that isn't very challenging like WOTG was but in high school the guy was miles ahead of me on electric bass doing things I didn't realize were possible until I saw him do it! And honestly, between Felix and Adam on bass I always thought Adam was the better player. I wonder if he still is. We sort of lost touch after I moved to NYC and speak maybe once or twice a year. I'll ask him to jam the next time I'm in FL! |

I used to hang out with the Pastorius bros. a lot back then and that sounds like my sense of humor.

| | | | it was late 2004 its all good as long as someone was amused, anyways the last time i saw adam (2008 right before the alley was closed down) he was saying his main focus was guitar and was only playing bass for fun, that night him and felix traded off on bass and on that given night i have to say felix was better, not taking anything away from adam he is a beast but honestly i think felix is one of the best bassists around right now

(See also Jason Bonham, James Jamerson Jr., Julian Lennon, Zak Starkey, Jakob Dylan, Abe Laboriel's son, etc.)
That being said... to Felix and all those named above who have carved out their own niche despite (not because of) their parent's legacy... mad props. Way to go. |

Both were in The Aquarium Rescue Unit w/ Oteil and it was possibly the sickest southern rock jazz fusion band on the planet.
