| | | | Fieldy - Did he leave his mark (stain) in the bass world?

I was thinking about Fieldy of Korn, not being a fan of him, (although I thought Korn was cool at the time).
My question is did he pioneer his "Clicky" bass sound that he is known for?
That is what I remember him for, bass wise. If he really did pioneer that sound, then he could be considered a bass innovator, like him or not.
If he did not pioneer that sound / style then who did? |

Matter of fact, I saw Korn last sunday night, he didn't sound as clicky as he did in the 90's, he had way more low end than anything

| | | | He definitely did not pioneer that sound, but he certainly has a uniqueness to his own. I like him. I like his bass lines and tone. It fits the band very well. |

Fieldy's playing, often, sounds like it has just clicks.

So instead of being inaudible, they raised up those EQ points to match more with the kick and that's what they got.
It's pretty freakin' basic.
I can't tell whether most of these OP's are 50 or 15 for stupid rehashed crap like this.
If you don't like Korn, great- don't start a thread about them. I'd swap spots with them anyday. Their first 3 albums were awesome. |

To me, although similar, they are not the same. Certainly Les Claypool has a clicky more funk oriented technique, but again, I consider different.
So, I see the influence, but not being the same yet. When I hear that drop tuned clicky sound I think of Fieldy or even Meshuggah (Not sure who in the band is doing it).
Come to think of it, the bass player from King's X uses that sound as well on certain songs. I guess its that ultra low tone where the low bass blends in but the clicky sound is up front in the mix.
By the way I don't hate Korn, they started a whole genre, like it or not.

| | | | I don't think he "pioneered" anything, but he definitely popularized that particular sound and had a generation of young players buying those Ibanez basses. |

It seemed like every local metal bass player had to have that darned "clicky sound" and I still get annoyed by hearing it...... Steve Harris "clicky is awesome BTW, but not that clankedy clank Feildy sound.......

At first I was wondering if the drummer forgot to WD40 his kick drum pedal because it squeaked and clicked so much! Im not joking, I was like, what the hell is that clicking sound? I couldnt hear a bass other than what the guitarists and drummer were pumping out. |
