| Figured out how to get the late Mike Starr's tone in "Would?" last night by accident.

I have seen a few threads here at Talkbass about the tone in that song and I have came close using a variety of gear over the years. But, it has little to do with the gear. Really all you need is a decent PJ bass and a decent amp. Most of it is all in technique more than the gear. Just have the P pup up, the J pup about 1/2 and the tone knob about half way. Kind of sweep your mids a bit on the amp.
Instead of using a pick. Use your thumb on top of your index finger. Pick just slightly over the Jazz pup towards the P a bit. Basically what you'll be doing is using the front of your finger to brush the front of the string while using the top of your thumb to clip the top almost simultaneously. I think this is called "chucking" if I am not mistaken. Yet, I know that studio tone for that song is well pursued by many bassist. Raking with the index and attack with the thumb got the closet I have ever gotten to it.
Basically its picking without a pick. I hope many of you AIC fans try this. Be intresteing to hear if you get the same results. |
